About District 1

District 1 is the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, with Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Hue street, Notre-Dame Cathedral and many hotels. Drivers pick you up at the door for the airport, Cu Chi, Can Gio, Vung Tau, the Mekong Delta or hourly city rides.

Booking tips: Many streets are one-way or no-stopping; send your exact address so the driver picks the closest pickup point.

Former District 1 is central HCMC, with Ben Thanh market, Nguyen Hue walking street, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, Independence Palace and many hotels. Tan Son Nhat Airport is about 7–8 km away. This page is for airport transfers, intercity trips and hourly hire in the city.

Administrative changes to know

Since 1 July 2025 districts no longer exist; former District 1 is organised into Sai Gon, Ben Thanh, Tan Dinh and Cau Ong Lanh wards. People still say "District 1".

The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for District 1, old names, new names or a map pin all work.

Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle

Tan Son Nhat is 25–45 minutes away depending on traffic. Peaks are about 7–9 am and 4.30–7 pm. Vung Tau is about 2 hours, My Tho about 1.5 hours.

Hourly hire in the city

For several meetings or a city tour, hourly hire of a 4- or 7-seater saves hunting for parking; the driver waits at each stop.

Central District 1

Former District 1 has walkable sights: Ben Thanh market, the Independence Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, Nguyen Hue walking street, the Opera House and the City Museum on Ly Tu Trong. Bui Vien and De Tham are lively at night. Bach Dang pier runs river buses to Binh An and Thanh Da. The Jade Emperor pagoda in Da Kao has carved wooden statues.

Since 2025 the area forms Saigon, Tan Dinh, Ben Thanh and Cau Ong Lanh wards. Metro Line 1 has Ben Thanh, Opera House and Ba Son stations. The centre is about 7 km from Tan Son Nhat, usually 25–40 minutes; Thu Thiem is reached via Thu Thiem 2 bridge or the Saigon River tunnel.

Many streets are one-way with no stopping; drivers agree on a kerbside spot or a hotel lobby.

Planning notes for Quan 1

District 1 has hotels along Dong Khoi, Le Loi, Nguyen Hue and the Pham Ngu Lao area. Saigon Zoo, open since 1864 at the end of Le Duan, has gardens and the Museum of Vietnamese History. Nha Rong and Bach Dang wharves are evening river viewpoints.
