About District 5
District 5 is in Ho Chi Minh City. Since 1 July 2025 Vietnam no longer has a district level, so the area is now made up of wards and communes under Ho Chi Minh City. Former District 5 is the heart of Cholon's Chinese community, with the Tue Thanh assembly hall (Thien Hau temple), Nghia An hall, the Hai Thuong Lan Ong herbal street and An Dong market. Tan Son Nhat is about 10 km away.
Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 districts no longer exist; the area now comprises An Đông, Chợ Quán, Chợ Lớn wards, HCMC. Locals still use the old district name.
Since 1 July 2025 local government has two tiers: province or city, and commune or ward. Districts no longer exist, but old names are still used every day. When booking in District 5, write your address the way you know it or send a map pin; drivers understand both old and new names.

Cholon
Binh Tay market was built in 1928 with funds from merchant Quach Dam and is Cholon's wholesale hub. The area has many Chinese assembly halls such as On Lang, Ha Chuong and Quynh Phu, and Cha Tam church. Walk between halls for half a day while the car waits nearby.
Cho Lon and the assembly halls
Former District 5 is the heart of Cho Lon, the Chinese community. Tue Thanh assembly hall (Thien Hau temple) on Nguyen Trai has hanging spiral incense and Shiwan ceramic roofs; Nghia An hall honours Guan Yu; On Lang, Ha Chuong and Quynh Phu halls are close by. Cha Tam church on Hoc Lac mixes Chinese styles.
Binh Tay market on the edge of District 6 is a large wholesale market, recently restored, with a courtyard and the Quach Dam statue. Hai Thuong Lan Ong street sells herbal medicine and Luong Nhu Hoc sells lanterns at Mid-Autumn. Foods include dumplings, braised duck noodles, har gow, Ha Ky desserts, chicken rice and goat hotpot. Since 2025 the area forms Cho Quan, An Dong and Cho Lon wards.
District 5 is about 8–10 km from Tan Son Nhat. Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Trai and Hong Bang are one-way in sections, so drivers pick up in the direction of traffic.
Planning notes for Quan 5
Cho Lon is busy from dawn; Kim Bien market sells chemicals and household goods and An Dong market sells clothes and fabric. The Lantern Festival on the first full moon brings processions and lion dances to the assembly halls. Nguyen Tri Phuong has late-night noodle and dessert stalls. Pickups on Tran Hung Dao are easier than in the alleys.
