Overview

Central Saigon packs many historic sights within a few kilometres: the Independence Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, the Opera House and Ben Thanh Market can all be linked on foot in one session. The War Remnants Museum, the Jade Emperor Pagoda and Binh Tay Market in Cholon need a few more hours. Outside the centre, the Cu Chi Tunnels to the north-west and the mangroves and beach of Can Gio to the south-east are two popular day trips. Both are about 50–70 km from the centre, so a private car with driver makes a same-day return easy and helps you avoid rush hour.

Best time to visitThe dry season from about December to April is best for walking around; in the rainy season (about May–November) showers usually come in the afternoon, so plan outdoor sights for the morning.

Getting thereThe central sights are around Ben Thanh – Saigon wards. The Cu Chi Tunnels are about 60–70 km from the centre via National Road 22, usually 1.5–2 hours; Can Gio is about 50–60 km, crossing the Binh Khanh ferry and following Rung Sac road, about 1.5–2 hours.
