Where Bai Dinh is after the boundary changes
Since 1 July 2025, Gia Sinh Commune, Ninh Giang Ward, Truong Yen, Ninh Hoa and Phuc Son communes and part of Gia Tan have merged into Tay Hoa Lu Ward. The new Ninh Binh Province covers the former Ninh Binh, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. When booking, "Bai Dinh Pagoda, Tay Hoa Lu Ward" or the old "Gia Sinh, Gia Vien" both work; drivers know both names.
The pagoda lies within the Trang An Landscape Complex, a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage site inscribed by UNESCO in 2014. It is about 20 km from central Hoa Lu (the former Ninh Binh city) and roughly 100 km by road from Hanoi. The main approach is Trang An Avenue joining Highway 38B; the road is wide and 45-seat coaches can reach the car park.

Two pagoda areas and how to plan your visit
Bai Dinh has two separate parts. The old pagoda is linked to the Ly-dynasty Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong, who placed Buddha statues in a mountain cave in 1136; the path climbs over rock, with the Light Cave, Dark Cave and Jade Well. The new pagoda, begun in 2003, climbs the hillside along a ceremonial axis: the triple gate, bell tower, Quan Am hall, Phap Chu hall, Tam The hall, the arhat corridors and the 13-storey relic stupa.
Seeing both takes a full morning or afternoon. Experienced Ninh Binh guides often plan it like this: the new pagoda in the morning, climbing to Tam The hall while it is still cool; lunch of crispy rice and mountain goat; then a boat at Trang An or Tam Coc in the afternoon. If you prefer quiet, spend time at the old pagoda, which few large groups visit.
Electric buggies run from the car park to the triple gate, or you can walk. Our driver waits in the car park, so there is no parking to sort out.
When to go and which days to avoid
Spring is festival season: the Bai Dinh festival opens early in the first lunar month and runs through spring. From the 4th to the 15th of the first lunar month the approach roads and car parks are usually packed; if you go then, leave Hanoi before 6 am.
May–June is golden rice season at Tam Coc, ideal to combine. Autumn (September–November) is dry with little rain, comfortable for older travellers. Summer is hot, and the new pagoda has many steps and wide stone courtyards, so go early or late in the afternoon with a hat and water.

- There is no entry ticket for the pagoda; buggies and some on-site services are charged separately.
- On the full-moon and first day of the lunar month pilgrim numbers rise, and the return to Hanoi often jams at the southern gateway.
