The Trang An Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh is a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage site inscribed by UNESCO in 2014. Visitors take boats through caves and limestone karsts and combine Hoa Lu ancient capital, Bai Dinh pagoda, Tam Coc and Mua Cave. It is about 95 km from Hanoi.
Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 the new Ninh Binh combines former Ninh Binh, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. Trang An remains in Ninh Binh; former Hoa Lu city is now split into new wards.
The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for Trang An, old names, new names or a map pin all work.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
A day trip from Hanoi works: about 1 h 45 – 2 h each way by the Phap Van – Cau Gie – Ninh Binh expressway. The Trang An boat trip takes 2–3 hours; the driver waits at the pier.

Trang An has more caves and longer routes; Tam Coc – Bich Dong runs on the Ngo Dong River between rice fields, golden around late May–early June. Mua Cave has stone steps to a panoramic peak.

Trang An has been a UNESCO mixed World Heritage Site since 2014. The pier offers three rowing routes through water caves such as Dia Linh, Sang and Toi, stopping at Trinh temple, Khong shrine and Tran temple; each takes about 2–3 hours, with 4–5 passengers per boat.
