About Sa Pa

Administrative changes to know

After 1 July 2025 the district level was removed; new addresses show only the commune or ward and the province or city. Locals and drivers still use old names, so for Sa Pa write your address as you know it or share a map location.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Hanoi to Sa Pa takes about 5.5–6 hours with rest stops. The last 35 km from Lao Cai city is a mountain road. Taking the night train to Lao Cai station and a car up to Sa Pa is also common.
Villages and rice terraces
Cat Cat village is walkable from town. Muong Hoa valley with Lao Chai and Ta Van is about 10 km away; the car drops you at the start and collects you at the end of the walk. Terraces are golden around September (harvest) and May–June (water season).
Fansipan and O Quy Ho Pass
The Fansipan cable car starts from central Sa Pa. O Quy Ho Pass links Sa Pa and Lai Chau with many viewpoints; go in the late afternoon for sunset.
Y Ty and Bac Ha
Bac Ha, about 110 km from Sa Pa, holds its Sunday market with Flower Hmong and has the early 20th-century Hoang A Tuong palace. Y Ty in Bat Xat has terraces and cloud seas, seen about September–March.
