Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 the new Ninh Binh combines former Ninh Binh, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. The former city is split into new wards; Tam Chuc pagoda (former Ha Nam) and Thinh Long beach (former Nam Dinh) are now in Ninh Binh too.
After 1 July 2025 the district level was removed; new addresses show only the commune or ward and the province or city. Locals and drivers still use old names, so for Ninh Binh write your address as you know it or share a map location.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Ninh Binh station is central; rail travellers can be met there. Cuc Phuong is about 45 km away.
Tam Chuc and Bai Dinh pagodas
The two large pagoda complexes fit one day; Tam Chuc lies north and Bai Dinh west of Trang An.
Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh
Hoa Lu was the 10th-century capital of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties; the temples of kings Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh keep carved wooden halls. Bai Dinh has a large new complex beside the old hillside pagoda, with electric carts from the gate. Van Long is a wetland reserve with Delacour's langurs and quiet bamboo boat rides.
The new Ninh Binh also includes Nam Dinh (Phu Nhai church, Tran temple, Thinh Long beach) and Ha Nam (Tam Chuc pagoda). Phat Diem stone cathedral in Kim Son, built in the late 19th century of stone and wood, is about 30 km from Trang An.
Tips for Ninh Binh
Since 2025 the new Ninh Binh combines Ninh Binh, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. Tam Coc – Bich Dong has a rowing route through three caves on the Ngo Dong River, golden with rice in May–June. Hang Mua has about 500 steps to a view over Tam Coc. Cuc Phuong National Park has primary forest and a primate rescue centre. Specialities include mountain goat, crispy rice and Gia Vien shrimp paste.
Extra notes on Ninh Binh
Bai Dinh has electric carts from the car park to the gate, about 3 km. The complex is large and walking all the halls takes about 2–3 hours.
