About Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Capital of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties
In 968 Dinh Bo Linh ended the turmoil of the twelve warlords, took the throne as Dinh Tien Hoang, named the country Dai Co Viet and set his capital at Hoa Lu, where limestone mountains formed natural ramparts. The capital served the Dinh, the Early Le and the start of the Ly dynasty until 1010, when Ly Thai To moved it to Thang Long. Two main temples remain, to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, a few hundred metres apart, with carved wooden halls from the Later Le period restored under the Nguyen.

The two temples take about 1–1.5 hours. Behind King Dinh's temple, about 260 steps climb Ma Yen mountain to the king's tomb, looking over the Truong Yen fields. Hoa Lu is about 8 km from Tam Coc and about 6 km from the Trang An boat wharf, so they are usually combined in a day.
- The Truong Yen festival runs from the 6th to the 10th of the third lunar month, with palanquin processions and re-enactments of the reed-flag battles.
- Middays are hot: see the temples in the morning and take a boat in the afternoon.

Roads around Hoa Lu
From Hanoi take the eastern North–South expressway past Phu Ly, exit at Cao Bo and follow Trang An Avenue, about 2 hours. From the former Nam Dinh area it is about 40 minutes via Highway 21 and Non Nuoc bridge. The temple road is a narrow two-lane road; 45-seaters park at the entrance car park and visitors walk about 300 m.
