Cao Bang and Ban Gioc Waterfall by car: route, how many days and water levels. Cao Bang kept its provincial name in the 2025 reorganisation. Ban Gioc Waterfall lies on the north-eastern border, about 330–370 km from Hanoi depending on the route, so allow at least 3 days.
To combine Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Bac Kan, see our north-east loop tour.
The falls carry the most water in the summer rainy season; from October the flow drops but skies are clearer and roads drier. December and January are cold with fog on the passes. Holidays and the days before Tết are busy, so arrive early.
Cao Bang rice rolls served with bone broth and Trung Khanh chestnuts are well-known local foods. Passes have tight bends, so start early and finish the last pass in daylight; carry ID in border areas.
Families: a high-clearance 7-seater. Groups: a 16-seater. Pickup in Hanoi: car rental in Hanoi.
Lock in Cao Bang dates near Tết early: Tết bookings need about a 10% deposit and quotes are always 10% off. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls; 8% VAT invoices on request.
Not advisable given the distance; plan 3 days.
It is being completed in sections; we check road status when planning your trip.

Plan three days: Hanoi to Cao Bang city, a full day for Ban Gioc and Nguom Ngao cave, then the drive back. Bring a rain jacket, shoes with grip for wet paths and a passport or ID, since the waterfall is in a border area.
Mountain roads take longer than the distance suggests, so avoid driving after dark and plan fuel stops in town.
See Lang Son by car and Ha Giang by car.
When is the water fullest? Usually in the rainy months, roughly summer to early autumn.
Do I need a permit? Carry ID; ask locally about border rules.
