Thai Nguyen's new boundaries
The 2025 provincial reform merged Bac Kan into Thai Nguyen, keeping the Thai Nguyen name with the capital in the former Thai Nguyen city. The old city is now split into Phan Dinh Phung (the square and Thai Nguyen station), Quyet Thang (the university area), Gia Sang, Tich Luong (the old steelworks), Linh Son and Quan Trieu wards. Pho Yen, Song Cong and Bac Kan are also new ward names.
When booking, just give the street and new ward, or a familiar landmark such as "Mo Bach junction", "Thai market" or "Thai Nguyen University gate"; drivers know both.

Roads to Hanoi and Noi Bai
The Hanoi – Thai Nguyen expressway (CT07) runs from Gia Lam in Hanoi to the southern edge of the former Thai Nguyen city; central Hanoi to Thai Nguyen is about 80 km, around 1 hour 30 minutes by car. Noi Bai Airport is reached on the new Highway 3 via Pho Yen and Soc Son, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Highway 3 continues north to Bac Kan and Cao Bang; the Giang and Gio passes further north are full of bends.
The Yen Binh, Diem Thuy and Song Cong industrial parks to the south host many electronics factories; at morning and afternoon shift changes, worker shuttles crowd Highway 3 and Thong Nhat road.

- Tan Cuong tea hills, about 10 km west of the centre: tea gardens and fresh tea buds, lovely early in the morning.
- Nui Coc Lake: a reservoir tied to the legend of Coc and Cong, with boat trips and an amusement area; busy with Hanoi visitors at weekends.
- Museum of Cultures of Vietnam's Ethnic Groups on Doi Can street, good with children.
- ATK Dinh Hoa: the wartime safe-zone relic site, about 1 hour 30 minutes away.
- Ba Be Lake (former Bac Kan): about 3 to 3.5 hours via Highways 3 and 279, worth an overnight stay.
Tea is picked in several flushes from about March to October. Autumn skies are clear for Ba Be; in the July–August rains some stretches to Bac Kan are prone to landslides, so ask the driver about road conditions first.
