Ha Giang by car: the route from Hanoi, driving times and the best season up to Tết 2027. After the 2025 provincial merger, Ha Giang is now part of Tuyen Quang province, but the Dong Van karst plateau loop keeps its familiar names. Here is practical advice for doing it by car: getting there, how many days you need, stops, food and choosing a vehicle that handles the mountain passes safely.
Cars usually take the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, turn towards Tuyen Quang and follow Highway 2 north. It is about 300 km, typically 6–7 hours door to door including breaks. Part of the Tuyen Quang – Ha Giang expressway opened at the end of 2025 and the remaining sections are being finished, so ask your driver about current conditions close to your date.
Flying in from Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang? Your car can meet you at Noi Bai airport instead of in the city. See Noi Bai airport transfers.
From Hanoi, a comfortable loop of the plateau takes 3–4 days. A typical order: Ha Giang – Quan Ba – Yen Minh – Dong Van and Lung Cu – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Meo Vac – back. Distances on the plateau look short but are full of bends, so plan moderate driving days with regular stops.
For a family of 4–5 with luggage for several days, a high-clearance 7-seater is comfortable. Larger groups can take a 16-seater. If you are not used to mountain roads, a car with driver lets everyone rest; chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls. Petrol or diesel is your choice. For a packaged itinerary, see the Northeast loop tour.
Breakfast of rice rolls or au tau porridge in towns such as Dong Van and Yen Minh is a highlight for many travellers. Highland markets run on set days of the week; ask your guesthouse to plan a visit.
Send your dates, pickup point, group size and preferred route for a quick quote. Every quote gets 10% off, the fleet is 2022–2025 models, contracts are signed by both parties, and an 8% VAT invoice is issued on request. See also car rental in Hanoi.
The main roads are fine, but with multi-day luggage and passes a high-clearance 7-seater is more comfortable.
Possible but very rushed, mostly in the car. We recommend 3–4 days.
They are set out in the quote before you book.

Bring warm layers, rain gear, grip shoes and motion sickness tablets. Fill up in towns before long passes.
Drive passes in daylight and wait out thick fog.
How many days? Three to four for the main loop.
Self-drive? Many choose a driver.
