Moc Chau by car: the route from Hanoi, white mustard and plum blossom seasons, and parking tips. The Moc Chau plateau in Son La province is about 200 km from Hanoi, close enough for a two-day trip that still feels like the highlands. From November to Tết, white mustard flowers give way to plum blossom, and many families and groups book a car up. Here is how to make the drive easy.
From Hanoi, cars usually head via Hoa Lac and Hoa Binh, then follow Highway 6 up to Moc Chau over the Thung Khe Pass. Expect about 4.5–5.5 hours depending on departure time and stops. The Hoa Binh – Moc Chau expressway is still under construction, so this season the climb to the plateau remains a national highway with passes.
The Na Ka valley has plum orchards along the road and is easy by car. The road into Mu Nau is steep and narrow, so many visitors park and take a local motorbike taxi in. The short cut to the Chieng Xuan mustard hills is a rough dirt road; by car, take the longer but wider route via Dai Yem waterfall and Chieng Ve farm.
Families of 4–6: a 7-seater. Groups and companies: a 16-seater or a limousine for wider seats. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls; petrol or diesel is your choice. See route prices on Hanoi to Moc Chau private car.
Every quote gets 10% off, the fleet is 2022–2025 models, and an 8% VAT invoice is issued on request. Tết prices are higher than usual with a deposit of about 10%, so book early.
