About Lang Son
Lang Son is a border province with Huu Nghi and Tan Thanh border gates, Tam Thanh cave and Dong Kinh market. From Hanoi the expressway takes about 2.5–3 hours.
Lang Son after the reorganisation: writing your address
Lang Son Province did not merge with another province in the 2025 reform, but districts were abolished and communes and wards were combined. The former Lang Son city is now four wards: Tam Thanh, Luong Van Tri, Dong Kinh and Ky Lua. The former Dong Dang town is now Dong Dang Commune, home of the Huu Nghi border gate.
When sending your pickup point, give the street plus the new ward, for example "Le Loi street, Luong Van Tri Ward". Locals still name areas after markets, Dong Kinh, Ky Lua and Gieng Vuong, and our drivers pick up by either name.

The road from Hanoi today
Hanoi – Lang Son is about 150–160 km. The usual way is the Hanoi – Bac Giang expressway then the Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway, joining Highway 1 into the centre. By car it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours.
The Huu Nghi – Chi Lang expressway (about 60 km) is being finished: the 27 km section from the end of the Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway to the Highway 4B junction has been technically open since May 2026; the rest to Huu Nghi and the branch to Tan Thanh and Coc Nam is due by the end of 2026. Once complete, border traffic will bypass Highway 1 through the centre.
Towards Quang Ninh, take Highway 4B via Loc Binh and Dinh Lap; towards Cao Bang, Highway 4A via That Khe is a winding pass, so choose a high-clearance 7-seater or pickup in the rainy season.
When to go and local advice
Autumn, September to November, is dry and cool, good for Bac Son and Mau Son. December to February is very cold and Mau Son may freeze; bring warm clothes, go early and come down before dark because of thick fog. In the first lunar month the Ky Cung – Ta Phu temple festival fills the centre and limits parking.
- Specialities to buy: roast duck, roast pork with mac mat leaves, khau nhuc braised pork, sour pho, and egg rice rolls for breakfast.
- Shopping at the border markets: tell us how many parcels so we pick a car with enough boot space.
