Van rental in Vietnam with a driver fits groups of 6 to 13: too many for a 7-seat car, too few to need a 29-seat coach. Our fleet has two main van types: the 16-seat van (Ford Transit, Hyundai Solati) and the 9-seat Limousine, a van refitted with large reclining seats. Both carry about 6–8 suitcases, but who they suit, how many people ride comfortably and the trips they are good for differ. This guide helps you choose by group size, luggage and distance.

Updated 21 October 2026. Written by the Car Rental Vietnam operations team from day-to-day dispatch experience and checked against current regulations. Traffic rules can change; check again before you travel.

What counts as a van, and when you need one

In Vietnamese car hire, a van usually means a small coach with a long body and sliding door, carrying 9 to 16 people including the driver. Unlike a 7-seat car, it has a separate luggage area at the back and an aisle between rows, so getting in and out at many stops is easier.

        Consider a van when:

One van is usually simpler than two small cars: the group leaves together, stops together and deals with one driver.

        9-seat Limousine vs 16-seat van

          9-seat Limousine 16-seat van
Comfortable load By the number of limousine seats; keep 1–2 seats free for hand luggage 10–13 passengers with luggage, 15 maximum
Luggage About 6–8 suitcases About 6–8 suitcases
Seats Wide, deep-reclining, often with leg rests Standard seats in several rows
Best suited to Families, business travellers, long legs Larger groups, airport runs, short tours with many stops
Model years 2022–2025, confirmed with the quote

The short version: both take about the same luggage, but the Limousine spends its space on comfort for fewer people, while the 16-seater spends it on headcount. Ten people will not fit in a Limousine; six people on a five-hour drive will fit in a 16-seater but will be more comfortable in a Limousine.

        Choosing by headcount and luggage

6–8 people on a long drive

Take the 9-seat Limousine. Older travellers tire less and children can sleep. Leave one seat for bags and snacks so the aisle stays clear.

        9–13 people

Take the 16-seat van. Thirteen people with one medium suitcase each is about the limit of the luggage space; with many large cases, ask us about a 29-seater.

        14–15 people

A 16-seater still seats you, but there is almost no room left for luggage. It works for short trips with little baggage, such as a party or an event in the city.

        Golf bags, strollers, gift boxes

These take more room than a suitcase. List them when you ask for a quote; sometimes two smaller vehicles or one 29-seater are more comfortable than a packed van. Golf groups can read how to match the vehicle to your golf bags.

        Airport runs and long legs

For airport transfers, the 16-seater is the default for larger groups because loading is quick. Send your flight number and the driver follows the landing time; there is no airport waiting fee.

On a 3–6 hour leg, comfort matters more. The Limousine lets you recline and sleep, with less bounce in the back rows. Whatever you choose, drivers in commercial transport may not drive more than 4 hours without a break, so long trips always include a rest stop. Passengers must wear seat belts wherever they are fitted.

Commercial vehicles carrying 8 or more passengers must have a journey monitoring device and a driver camera; this applies to both van types.

        Typical trips

        What the chauffeur price includes

A van with driver quote includes fuel, tolls and the driver. Every quote gets 10% off. An 8% VAT invoice is available on request with your company details. Child seats are available if you ask in advance; tell us the child's age.

We do not publish fixed prices in articles because the price depends on route, waiting time and date. Enter your pick-up and drop-off in the quick-quote form to see a price. Around Tết a deposit of about 10% holds the vehicle.

On board: seats, air-con and extras

On a short city run the difference between the two is small. On a 4–6 hour leg it shows in three places.

        Seats and posture

Limousine seats usually have high headrests, their own armrests, a deep recline and often a leg rest, so passengers can actually sleep. A 16-seater has a modest recline and fair legroom, fine for younger travellers or legs under three hours.

        Air-con and noise

Both have multi-vent air-conditioning. A full 16-seater heats up faster when parked in the sun, so drivers usually cool it a few minutes before pick-up. Many Limousines have extra sound insulation and a quieter cabin.

        Extras

Depending on the vehicle: USB charging, screens, reading lights, curtains. If the group needs something specific, write it in the quote request so we confirm the right vehicle; interiors vary by year and by coachbuilder.

Common van routes from Ho Chi Minh City

        Route Approx. time Suggestion
Tan Son Nhat airport – city centre 30–60 min 16-seater for large groups with many bags
Ho Chi Minh City – Vung Tau 2–2.5 h Either; Limousine for a family break
Ho Chi Minh City – Phan Thiet, Mui Ne about 3 h by expressway Limousine for 6–8, 16-seater for 9–13
Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho 3–4 h Limousine for business, 16-seater for tours
Ho Chi Minh City – Da Lat 7–8 h Limousine for rest over the Bao Loc pass

Times are a guide and depend on departure time and traffic leaving the city. Both van types are under 29 seats, so the large-coach restrictions in central Da Lat since 1 August 2026 do not apply to them.

When two vehicles beat one van

Sometimes a van is not the right answer even if the seats add up:

Describe the whole plan when asking for a quote; we will suggest an option and explain why.

        What we see when dispatching

A common case: a family of eight books a 9-seat Limousine to Da Lat and, at pick-up, adds two boxes of fruit and a pushchair. The trip still works, but bags end up on the spare seat and in the aisle and the mountain leg is less comfortable. Told in advance, a 16-seater with room to spare, or sending the boxes separately, would have been better.

The opposite case: twelve people book a 16-seater to a wedding in the city with no luggage. It fits perfectly and boarding is quick; a Limousine would add nothing. There is no universally better van, only the one that fits the trip.

        Booking tips for groups

        1. Count actual bags, not people. Three small holdalls can equal one suitcase.
        2. Send all pick-up addresses if people are staying in different places; the driver will order the stops.
        3. Mention older travellers or small children so they get seats near the door.
        4. For multi-day trips, ask about the driver's working hours and where the driver stays overnight.
        5. Book early for weekends, holidays and Tết, when vans are in demand.

See the vehicles on our 16-seat van page and limousine options. For groups over 15, read about 29-seat coaches for tour groups, and to understand pricing, see what a chauffeur price covers.
