Sample itineraries
Day trip is not recommended
At about 300 km each way, Da Lat is too far for a same-day return. Plan at least 2 days, 1 night.
2 days, 1 night
Day 1: leave at 5 – 6 am, breakfast around Dau Giay or Dinh Quan, lunch in Bao Loc among the tea hills, arrive around 1 – 2 pm and check in. Afternoon at Xuan Huong Lake and the night market. Day 2: Langbiang or the flower gardens in the morning, leave after lunch and reach Saigon in the evening.
3 days, 2 nights
Add Datanla or Pongour waterfalls, coffee farms in Cau Dat and a slower drive home with a stop in Bao Loc.
Stops and sights
- Dinh Quan: roadside breakfast and seasonal fruit such as rambutan and durian.
- Bao Loc: the usual lunch stop; tea and coffee shops among the hills, popular for gifts.
- Dambri waterfall near Bao Loc: a detour of about 30 minutes each way.
- Di Linh and Duc Trong: coffee country before the climb to Da Lat.
2026 road update: Dau Giay – Lien Khuong Expressway (updated 13 October 2026)
The Dau Giay – Lien Khuong Expressway, more than 200 km long, is being built in three sections and none is open to traffic as of October 2026. Cars to Da Lat still run mainly on National Road 20.
- Dau Giay – Tan Phu (about 60 km): started 19 August 2025, planned completion 19 August 2027 (Bao Xay Dung, 6 August 2026).
- Tan Phu – Bao Loc (about 66 km): targeted for operation in Q4 2027 (CafeLand, citing Lam Dong province).
- Bao Loc – Lien Khuong (almost 74 km): on 8 October 2026 the Lam Dong People's Council approved a larger scale, with technical opening in Q3 2028 and operation in Q4 2028 (VOV).
VnExpress reports that once all three sections open, the trip could drop from 6 – 7 hours to just over 3 hours. Until then, plan 6 – 7 hours one way.
What to eat in Da Lat
Banh can, grilled rice paper (banh trang nuong), hot soy milk at the night market, artichoke tea and local strawberries. Bao Loc tea and coffee are the classic gifts on the way home.
Three days in the highlands, hour by hour
Day 1. Your driver collects you at about 5:30 am. Breakfast is near Dau Giay around 7, and around 9 you can stretch your legs for a quarter of an hour at the stacked rocks of Dinh Quan. Lunch and a pot of local tea follow in Bao Loc at about 11:30. Early in the afternoon you climb the Bao Loc Pass and pass through Di Linh and Duc Trong, and you should be checking in to your Da Lat hotel by 2:30 to 3 pm. Spend the evening walking around Xuan Huong Lake and the night market.
Day 2. Start with banh can for breakfast at 7, then head to the Langbiang area at 8. If you like, a jeep can take you up to Radar Peak. Come back to the centre for lunch, then spend the afternoon at Truc Lam Zen Monastery and Tuyen Lam Lake. For dinner, try chicken hotpot with la e leaves.
Day 3. On a clear morning, leave at 6 for sunrise over the Cau Dat tea hills. Check out at about 10 and leave Da Lat at 11. Stop for lunch in Bao Loc again and you should be back in Saigon between 6 and 7 pm.
With children or older relatives
The trip is long, so break it into three legs of about two hours each. The driver stops at petrol stations and restaurants that have clean toilets. Children under six are best in the middle seat with an adult next to them. Pack a neck pillow and a light blanket, because the air conditioning combined with Da Lat's cool afternoons can feel chilly. Anyone with heart or blood-pressure problems should check with a doctor before travelling up to about 1,500 m. Langbiang and the tea hills are steep. For travellers who find walking hard, flat places such as Xuan Huong Lake and Lam Vien Square are easier.
Is the drive worth it compared with flying?
For one or two people, flying to Lien Khuong is usually quicker. For families or groups, the road has its advantages: luggage is no problem, you see the coffee and tea country, and you can stop at Dambri or Pongour on the way. Until the new expressway sections open (see the 2026 update above), allow a full day for each direction. Many travellers drive up and fly back, or the other way round.
Large groups
Coaches of 29 and 45 seats drive National Road 20 without problems, but in the steep, narrow streets of central Da Lat they unload at the main roads. Send us your hotel name so the driver can check access in advance. For company trips we schedule travel in daylight over the Bao Loc Pass and plan lunch for the whole group in Bao Loc.
Tips from our drivers
- Night driving is quiet but the Bao Loc Pass is poorly lit and often foggy, so coaches of 29 and 45 seats run in daylight.
- Bring a jacket: Da Lat sits at about 1,500 m and evenings are cool all year.
- People prone to car sickness should sit in front and eat lightly before the pass.
- Send your hotel name in advance; some lanes in the centre only allow cars under 16 seats.
