Route and real travel time

Expressways all the way: Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay, Dau Giay – Phan Thiet, Phan Thiet – Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao – Cam Lam and Cam Lam – Nha Trang, then into the city. Since 1 January 2026 the eastern North – South expressway runs without a break from Ho Chi Minh City past Nha Trang.

Leave early in the morning, breakfast around Phan Thiet, lunch in Phan Rang – Thap Cham, arrive in Nha Trang mid-afternoon.

Multi-day trip

Combine Phan Thiet, Ninh Chu or Vinh Hy bay on the way, and Nha Trang for 2 – 3 nights. Quoted per itinerary.

2026 road update: continuous expressway

From 1 January 2026, the last 13 km of the Van Phong – Nha Trang Expressway opened, completing its 83 km. According to Tuoi Tre, you can now drive from Ho Chi Minh City by expressway the whole way. Most South-Central sections are 4 lanes with a 90 km/h limit, and tunnels such as Nui Vung and Doc San have their own limits. So even on expressways the real trip is about 6 – 7 hours including leaving the city and rest stops, not the 4 – 5 hours some ads claim.

Nha Trang food and when to go

Fish cake noodle soup (bun cha ca), banh can, Ninh Hoa grilled pork rolls and jellyfish noodle soup. Khanh Hoa has a short rainy season, mostly from about September to December, sometimes with storms; the rest of the year is sunny.

One-way schedule, hour by hour

After an early-morning pickup you join the Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway at about 6:30. Breakfast is around Phan Thiet at about 8:30, and lunch is in Phan Rang – Thap Cham between 11:30 and noon. You leave the expressway at Cam Lam at about 2 pm and check in at Nha Trang around 3 pm. If you want to see Vinh Hy Bay, leave the expressway in Ninh Thuan and add about 1.5 – 2 hours.

Making a two-day trip of it

Breaking the journey turns a long drive into a holiday in itself. Close to Phan Rang – Thap Cham you can visit:

Po Klong Garai: a group of Cham towers on Trau hill, near the city.
Vinh Hy Bay: glass-bottom boats. The coast road from Ninh Chu to Vinh Hy is beautiful but has steep sections and many bends.
Nam Cuong sand dunes and Bau Truc pottery village: also near Phan Rang.

Spend a night in Ninh Chu, then drive on to Nha Trang the next morning.

Car or plane?

For one or two people, flying is usually faster. For a family of five to seven, or for a group, a private car takes all your luggage, stops wherever you like and saves the trips to and from airports. Many travellers combine the two: they drive one way and fly the other.

With children

Six to seven hours is a long time for small children. Plan a stop roughly every two hours, bring snacks and water for the quieter stretches of expressway, and choose the middle row of a 7-seater so an adult can sit next to the child seat. A rest of an hour or more at lunch in Phan Rang makes the afternoon much easier.

Groups

A 45-seat coach can use the expressway the whole way. In Nha Trang, Tran Phu Street and the main roads are easy for coaches. For island trips, the coach drops the group at the port and waits there until the boats return. At hotels in small lanes, guests walk the last few metres from the main road.

A note on the coast you pass

South of Nha Trang, the road runs past Cam Ranh Bay, one of the finest natural deep-water bays in Southeast Asia, and the long white beach of Bai Dai. If you are staying at a Bai Dai resort, send us the name, because it is closer than the city centre and the price reflects the real distance.

Planning notes for the long drive

Over more than 400 km, the driver takes regular breaks for safety, so build these into your plans rather than treating them as delays. Large groups are better off in 29 or 45-seat coaches, which have spacious luggage holds for a week's worth of suitcases. A 7-seater carries five or six adults with luggage, which suits most families.

For a three-day trip with stops on the way, a sensible plan is Phan Thiet on day one, Phan Rang and Vinh Hy on day two and Nha Trang on day three. The car stays with you throughout, so you can change the order if the weather or your mood changes. One-way bookings are common: many travellers take the car down and fly home. Tell us your hotel or resort and we quote the exact distance. Bai Dai and Cam Ranh resorts are around 30 – 40 km before central Nha Trang.

Travelling with grandparents? Ask for the 9-seat limousine van. Its reclining seats make a big difference over six or seven hours.
