A pre-booked Tan Son Nhat airport transfer is the calmest way out of Ho Chi Minh City's airport (SGN), especially after a long-haul flight. To make it work, you need three things: the right terminal, a working way to message your driver, and the waiting, surcharge and cancellation terms in writing before you fly. This guide walks you from the aircraft door to the back seat, and back to the airport when you leave.

Tan Son Nhat now has three passenger terminals. Terminal 3 (T3), a new domestic terminal, opened on 19 April 2025, and most domestic airlines moved there during 2025.
| Terminal | Flights | Airlines (October 2026) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Domestic | Vietjet (check-in at Hall A since 13 January 2026) | The airport operator is studying a T1 rebuild that may move some Vietjet flights to T3; no date announced |
| T2 | International | All international carriers | Immigration and customs make the walk to the kerb longer |
| T3 | Domestic | Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, VASCO, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines and other non-Vietjet domestic carriers | Separate building with its own access road; not walkable from T2 with luggage |
If you arrive internationally and connect onward within Vietnam, you will usually move from T2 to T1 or T3. Allocations can change, so check the terminal on your booking a day before you fly. When you book a Tan Son Nhat airport transfer, just send your flight number and the dispatcher will match it to the right terminal.
Cars may only stop very briefly at the kerb, typically no more than three minutes under airport rules. So private-hire drivers usually wait in the car park or a designated contract-vehicle area, then meet you at the exit or bring the car to the pickup lane once you have your bags.
If drivers approach you in the arrivals hall offering rides, only get into a car whose driver name and plate match your confirmation message.
Your driver will most likely contact you on WhatsApp or Zalo. Before you fly, install an eSIM or plan to buy a local SIM at the airport, and make sure the number you gave when booking can receive messages on landing. Free airport Wi-Fi may work, but do not count on it. Many drivers speak limited English, so put everything important in writing: terminal, flight number, number of bags and hotel address.
There is no official figure; it depends on where the aircraft parks, checked bags and how many flights land together. For planning, our dispatchers usually allow:
Vietnam's Immigration Department has been piloting a voluntary Pre-arrival Information (PAI) declaration for foreign passengers at Tan Son Nhat since April 2026 to speed up entry; it can be submitted online within three days before arrival, so check whether it applies to your flight. If you need a faster exit, read our guide to the airport fast track service.
Share your flight number, not just a landing time, so the dispatcher can check the actual arrival and adjust the pickup if you land early or late; still, message the booking line yourself if your schedule changes. Ask whether any waiting time is free, whether it runs from the scheduled or actual landing time, and what the hourly waiting fee is after that.
A driver holding a sign with your name at the exit is reassuring on a first visit, or when you are collecting a colleague or older relative. It may carry a separate fee, so ask first. Give the name exactly as it appears in the passport.
Tell us the number of large suitcases, cabin bags, strollers and golf bags, not just passengers. A 4-seater takes up to four guests but is most comfortable for one to three travellers with light luggage; four people with big cases usually need a 7-seater, but using every seat in a 7-seater leaves little room for bags. See how to choose a car size for your group.
Under Vietnam's Road Traffic Order and Safety Law as amended by Law 118/2025/QH15 (in force from 1 July 2026), children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the driver's row, except in single-row vehicles. The rule requiring a child restraint does not apply to commercial passenger vehicles, which includes hired cars with drivers. In practice, children ride in the back; if you want a child seat, request it in advance or bring your own.
Many long-haul flights land late at night. Book ahead, reconfirm on the day and save the hotline number. Ask which payment methods apply to your booking (cash in Vietnamese dong, bank transfer or others) rather than assuming the driver can take a card. If your company needs a VAT invoice, request it when booking with the company name, tax code and email.
A transfer price depends on the distance between the airport and your address, the vehicle type, the time of day (late night or weekend), waiting time and extras such as a name sign or a stop on the way. Our quote tool states that trip prices already include the driver's wage and road tolls, and our airport service page adds that reference prices usually cover fuel and insurance but may exclude VAT. Check the price list or the city-to-airport private car page.
Car Rental Vietnam tip: As soon as you land, send your driver a short message such as "Landed, waiting for bags, belt 5". It lets them time the move into the pickup lane, so nobody has to circle the airport because of the three-minute limit.
Roads around the airport, including Truong Son, Cong Hoa and Truong Chinh, are busy at rush hour and before Tet; a peak-hour lane-management scheme on Cong Hoa has eased congestion since mid-May 2026, but conditions vary. Follow your airline's recommended arrival time, then add travel time plus at least 30 to 60 minutes of buffer at peak hours, in rain or on holidays. The rainy season runs roughly May to November, and afternoon downpours slow traffic noticeably.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) plans to start commercial flights at the new Long Thanh International Airport on 24 December 2026, beginning with about 20 to 30 flights a day by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet. As of October 2026 it is still in trial operations. Read our Long Thanh airport guide and always check which airport is printed on your ticket.
International flights use Terminal 2. As of October 2026, Vietjet's domestic flights use Terminal 1, while Vietnam Airlines and most other domestic airlines use Terminal 3.
Your driver will message you on WhatsApp or Zalo with the exact exit door or pillar once you have your bags. If you booked a name sign, they will be waiting at the arrivals exit holding your name.
With your flight number, dispatch can adjust the pickup to the actual landing time. Any free waiting time, and the fee after it, applies under the policy you agreed in writing.
Since 1 July 2026, commercial passenger vehicles are exempt from the child-restraint requirement, but children under 10 and under 1.35 m must not sit in the driver's row. A child seat is still recommended; request one in advance or bring your own.
Do not assume you can pay by card in the car. Confirm the payment method when you book, and carry some Vietnamese dong as a backup.

To arrange a Tan Son Nhat Airport pickup, send the flight number, arrival date, terminal, passenger count and luggage. Check the terminal on your airline confirmation rather than assuming it from a previous trip. After collecting your bags, contact the driver to agree on the exit or meeting point; the airport map marker is not an exact pickup location. Mention any stops before your hotel when requesting a quote, and confirm the waiting allowance and airport pickup charges before booking.
View the destination reference point on the map. This marker identifies the destination area; confirm the exact pickup address or meeting point when booking.
