Choosing between a 4-seater, a 7-seater and a 16-seater van in Vietnam depends as much on your suitcases, the ages in your group and the type of road as on the headcount. This guide gives a decision table by group size and luggage, explains why a full 7-seater rarely fits big bags, and covers child-seat rules, comfort on long routes and when two small cars beat one van. Reference figures for each vehicle are on our price list.

Seat count is only half the answer. Five colleagues with carry-ons and a family of five with five large suitcases for a two-week trip need different vehicles. When you send a request, list adults, children with their ages, large suitcases, small bags and anything bulky such as a stroller, golf bags, a surfboard or a folding wheelchair.
This table follows the vehicle guidance on the Car Rental Vietnam website. It is a guide, not a guaranteed capacity: your actual luggage decides whether a vehicle fits.
| Vehicle | Suggested group | Luggage | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-seater (sedan, small SUV) | 1 to 4 guests | Comfortable with fewer guests; four adults with four large cases rarely fit the boot | Airport runs, business trips, city days |
| 7-seater (MPV, SUV) | 4 to 6 guests | With every seat in use, space behind the last row is very tight | Families, small groups going out of town |
| Limousine van (9, 12, 16, 19, 24 or 26-seat layouts) | Small or mid-size groups wanting roomy seats | Depends on layout; ask about the luggage area | Long routes, older travellers, business groups |
| 16-seater van | About 8 to 14 guests with luggage; worth considering for seven with lots of bags | The fuller the van, the less room for cases | Extended families, friends, short tours |
| 29, 35 or 45-seat coach | Large groups | Usually an underfloor luggage hold | Events, team trips, tour groups |
| Sleeper bus | Groups on long overnight legs | Depends on the vehicle | Long distances where lying down helps |
The fleet also includes a double-cab pickup for trips with bulky gear. Whatever you choose, our staff confirm the vehicle once they know your headcount and bags.
A 7-seat MPV such as a Mitsubishi Xpander or Toyota Veloz has three rows. With the third row up, the space behind it usually takes a few soft bags rather than large suitcases. Fold that row and you gain luggage space but lose seats. That is why our site notes that using every seat in a 7-seater reduces luggage room.
For a family of five or six with large suitcases, consider one of three options: a 7-seater if you pack light, a limousine van or 16-seater if you carry several big cases, or leave some luggage at the hotel on sightseeing days.
Every child needs their own seat, so count children in the total. Under Article 10 of Vietnam's Road Traffic Order and Safety Law, as amended by Law 118/2025/QH15 from 1 July 2026 (the rule was originally due on 1 January 2026 but was postponed), children under 10 years old and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the same row as the driver, except in single-row vehicles. The child-restraint requirement does not apply to commercial passenger vehicles, but a child seat is still the safer choice.
If you need one, ask when you book so availability can be confirmed, or bring your own. Child seats take up room, so a 7-seater with one or two fitted has less space than you might expect.
On the other hand, one larger vehicle keeps everyone together and means only one driver to coordinate with. Two cars mean two drivers, so the cost is not always lower; ask for a quote on both options.
Four adults and two children aged 6 and 9, with five large suitcases, landing at Tan Son Nhat and heading to Vung Tau for two days:
Larger vehicles cost more to run, limousine vans cost more than standard vans with the same seat count, and two small cars mean two drivers. Car Rental Vietnam quotes include the driver's wage and road tolls; ask about overtime, holiday surcharges and VAT. Details are in what a private car with driver includes.
Car Rental Vietnam tip: Take a photo of your packed luggage and send it with your booking request on WhatsApp. It tells our staff far more than "a few suitcases".
Around Tet (Lunar New Year), the 30 April – 1 May holiday, 2 September and the summer break, 16-seaters and limousine vans are often booked early by extended families. In the south's rainy season (roughly May to November) and during heavy rain in the highlands, mountain passes may be diverted, so allow extra time and pack luggage in waterproof bags.
The seats are there, but with every seat in use there is almost no room for large suitcases. If you have luggage, a limousine van or 16-seater is the better choice.
It depends on the model. One or two travellers are usually fine; four adults with four large suitcases rarely fit the boot. Send your bag count so we can confirm.
Since 1 July 2026, children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the driver's row, except in single-row vehicles.
It has fewer but wider, more comfortable seats, which suits long journeys. Luggage space depends on the layout, so ask before booking.
Vehicles over 16 seats are restricted in the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake during morning and evening peaks. Ask about the pickup point in advance or consider a smaller vehicle.
