Ho Chi Minh City to Pleiku by car is a long run of about 520–540 km on Highway 14, usually 10–12 hours on the road. Since 2025, Gia Lai province also includes former Bình Định, so it now has two gateways: Pleiku on the plateau and Quy Nhơn on the coast. This guide covers both corridors in both directions, where to stop overnight, and the problems that come up on long drives.
Cars go from the city to Chơn Thành, then Highway 14 through former Đắk Nông and Buôn Ma Thuột up to Pleiku. There is no direct expressway; the Pleiku – Buôn Ma Thuột – Gia Nghĩa expressway is still at the preparation stage. The road is mostly two lanes, busy with trucks and coaches, and passes many towns, so many families split it over two days with a night in Buôn Ma Thuột.
From the city, the eastern North–South expressway runs via Phan Thiết and Nha Trang to Quy Nhơn, about 610–650 km and usually 10–12 hours including stops. The expressway makes it steadier than the old Highway 1, but it is still a very long day; drivers should break regularly at rest stops.
The two ends of the province are joined by Highway 19, about 170 km over the An Khê and Mang Yang passes. The passes are long and carry heavy trucks, with fog in the rainy season and early mornings, so cross in daylight. A sensible loop is up one way and back the other: HCMC – Buôn Ma Thuột – Pleiku – Quy Nhơn – HCMC.
Heading back from Gia Lai, leave early to reach the city before evening, or stop overnight on the way. Over Tết 2027, coaches and private cars all head south on the 4th to 6th days; book early and fix both dates. If time is short, fly into Pleiku or Phù Cát (Quy Nhơn) and hire a car locally.
Visit Pleiku in late October or early November 2026 and you will catch the wild sunflower season and the Gong Festival – Wild Sunflower Week – Chư Đang Ya Volcano, running from 30 October to 8 November 2026 in Pleiku ward, Biển Hồ commune and neighbouring areas.
Hotels in Pleiku fill up early and central streets may be diverted. Book your room first, then have the driver drop you on a parallel street a few hundred metres away. Wild sunflowers usually bloom from October to December, so later trips still see flowers along the roads.
Extinct for millions of years, with a funnel-shaped crater about 500 m above sea level, in Biển Hồ commune. The path up is steep in places; wear grippy shoes and go early to avoid the sun.
A large lake north of Pleiku, approached along a pine-lined road. Come early while mist still sits on the water. Nearby, Tơ Nưng – Biển Hồ restaurant at 220 Tôn Đức Thắng serves Highland dishes such as grilled chicken, bamboo-tube rice and sun-dried beef with red-ant salt.
Gia Lai dry pho, or "two-bowl pho", comes as one bowl of tossed noodles and one bowl of broth. Phở khô Hồng at 22–24 Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, former Hội Thương ward, is a familiar stop for travellers; it opens in the morning until early afternoon.
Bánh xèo with jumping shrimp is the easiest local dish to find. Diên Hồng street in the centre has a row of places, such as Gia Vỹ at 19 Diên Hồng. Rice-vermicelli cakes with pork offal porridge are a common breakfast around the centre and markets.
If 10–12 hours in a car is too much, fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Pleiku or Phù Cát (for Quy Nhơn) and use a car with driver for sightseeing.
| Vehicle | Large suitcases | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 seat | about 3 | Couples, business |
| 7-seater | about 4 | Families, mountain passes |
| 16-seat van, 9-seat limousine | about 6–8 | Festival groups, friends |
Pleiku has no railway, but the Quy Nhơn side sits on the North–South line. Reunification Express sleepers from Saigon station stop at Diêu Trì, about 10 km from central Quy Nhơn. How it works:
| Option | Pros | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Car all the way | Flexible, lots of luggage | 10–12 hours each way, best split over two days |
| Fly + pick-up | Fast, less tiring | Airline baggage limits |
| Sleeper + pick-up | Sleep on board, good for nervous flyers | Only to Diêu Trì; no station in Pleiku |
| Day | Route | Ideas |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fly HCMC – Pleiku | Airport pick-up, Biển Hồ in the afternoon, dry pho or Highland grills for dinner. |
| 2 | Pleiku – Chư Đang Ya | Early climb; in flower season, leave by 6 a.m. for soft light and fewer people. |
| 3 | Pleiku – Quy Nhơn (Highway 19) | Leave around 8 a.m., cross Mang Yang and An Khê in daylight, reach Quy Nhơn mid-afternoon, walk Ghềnh Ráng. |
| 4 | Quy Nhơn | Twin Towers, Eo Gió; afternoon to Phù Cát airport or the train at Diêu Trì. |
From October to December, Pleiku is in its dry season but mornings and nights are cold and misty; bring a jacket. The Quy Nhơn coast is the opposite, in the rainy season with possible depressions and storms; watch forecasts and keep a spare day if you plan a boat to Kỳ Co.
Mang Yang pass and the An Khê stretch carry many heavy trucks. A driver who knows the road keeps distance, uses low gears downhill and never overtakes on bends. Anyone prone to car sickness should sit in the front or middle row and eat lightly beforehand.
Long trips for 4–6: a high-clearance 7-seater; bigger groups: a 16-seat van or a limousine van. Locally: self-drive cars in Gia Lai and Quy Nhon to Pleiku by car.
Travelling with young children? Ask in advance and we will fit child seats. Year-end prices run higher; Tết bookings take a deposit of about 10%. Need a price today? Send us your trip details.
