Since late April 2026, the eastern North–South expressway has run the whole way from Lạng Sơn to Cà Mau. For the first time you can drive the length of Vietnam almost entirely on expressway, about 2,000 km. At year-end it suits families heading home to the centre or planning a long trip before Tết.
A relaxed plan is 6–8 driving days of 300–400 km, overnighting in cities such as Vinh, Đồng Hới or Huế, Đà Nẵng, Quy Nhơn and Nha Trang. If you are only heading home, drive half the route and return the car or book one way.
Rest stops sit roughly every 100 km, though some are still being finished. Speed limits vary by section; many two-lane-each-way stretches are slower than four-lane ones. Read the signs on each section rather than assuming one limit.
300–400 km a day for several days is tiring; with two drivers, swap every 2 hours. A car with driver lets everyone rest, and the price includes fuel and tolls. With self-drive, tolls are collected electronically, so check the toll tag before you go.
The centre still sees heavy rain in November and December, with early-morning fog on some sections; the north turns cold from December. Watch the forecast and leave more space on wet roads.
| Day | Leg | Suggested stop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hanoi – Ninh Bình – Thanh Hóa | Tràng An or Tam Cốc in the morning |
| 2 | Thanh Hóa – Vinh – Hà Tĩnh | Early night, dinner in Vinh |
| 3 | Hà Tĩnh – Đồng Hới (Quảng Trị) | Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng in the afternoon |
| 4 | Đồng Hới – Huế | Imperial City and royal tombs |
| 5 | Huế – Đà Nẵng – Hội An | Through the Hải Vân tunnel; evening in Hội An |
| 6 | Hội An – Quy Nhơn (Gia Lai) | Quy Nhơn beach, Eo Gió |
| 7 | Quy Nhơn – Nha Trang (Khánh Hòa) | Ponagar towers |
| 8 | Nha Trang – Ho Chi Minh City | Break in Phan Thiết or at an expressway service area |
Province names follow the 2025 reorganisation. Shorten by dropping sights, or add rest days in Huế and Hội An.
The Tràng An landscape complex is a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage site, explored by boat through caves and flooded valleys. Tam Cốc – Bích Động nearby suits a morning visit.
A natural World Heritage national park known for its caves. Phong Nha cave is reached by boat on the Son river; Paradise cave by wooden walkways inside.
The Complex of Huế Monuments includes the Imperial City, royal tombs and Thiên Mụ pagoda on the Perfume River.
Hội An Ancient Town is a World Heritage site, loveliest in the evening when lanterns are lit.
Both seaside cities have Cham monuments; the Ponagar towers in Nha Trang stand by the Cái river mouth.
Not everyone has eight days. A shorter plan is to fly one way and drive back, or cover half the route.
With a chauffeured car the one-way trip is quoted as a whole; for self-drive, ask about returning the car in another city.
The train runs parallel to the expressway for much of the route. Families can sleep through long legs on the train and book a station pick-up for daytime sightseeing:
Send the train code and carriage so the driver waits at the exit and follows the real arrival time.
| Group | Vehicle | Luggage |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 people | 4–5 seat | About 3 suitcases; fine for a week's light packing |
| 4–5 people | 7 seat | About 4 suitcases plus food and water |
| 6–9 people or older travellers | 9-seat limousine | About 6–8 suitcases, reclining seats |
| 10–15 people | 16 seat | About 6–8 suitcases |
On a long trip, soft bags pack better; keep daily items in one small bag so big cases stay closed each night.
Each region has its dishes: bánh cuốn and phở in the north; bún bò and cơm hến in Huế; mì Quảng and cao lầu in Hội An; bánh xèo with jumping shrimp in Quy Nhơn; fish-cake noodles and nem nướng in Nha Trang. Ask the driver for local favourites; self-drivers with time should eat in town rather than at service areas.
On a multi-day chauffeured trip, a few agreements at the start keep everyone comfortable.
Agree start and finish times. Drivers need proper rest to drive safely the next day; drive in daylight and avoid long night stints on the expressway.
Ask with the quote how the driver's room and meals on provincial nights are handled. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls.
Want an extra night in Hội An or a detour to Phong Nha? Say early so we can adjust. Every quote gets 10% off; book early at year's end, as 16-seaters and 9-seat limousines go fast.
Tell us how many young children travel so seats are ready; for older travellers, the reclining seats of a 9-seat limousine ease 300–400 km days.
A two-thousand-kilometre trip needs more preparation than a weekend away. Run through this list before departure.
If you would rather not handle this, a chauffeured car takes care of the vehicle, papers, fuel and tolls.
Keep each day to about 300–400 km so there is time for breaks, meals and sights. A common split from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi overnights in Nha Trang, Quy Nhơn, Đà Nẵng, Đồng Hới and Vinh. Short on time? Drive one way and fly or take the overnight train back, with pickup at the airport or station. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls, so you only agree the itinerary and the driver's lodging.
Long trips for 4–5 people: a 7-seater with room for bags and snacks; larger groups: a 16-seater. Rest stop list: expressway rest stops.
Booking: chauffeur quotes already cover fuel and tolls and get 10% off; vehicles are 2022–2025 models. Need an 8% VAT invoice? Tell us when you book.
