Getting to Phong Nha
Dong Hoi Airport and station are about 45 km from Phong Nha Commune, via Highway 1 and the provincial road through Hoan Lao or the eastern Ho Chi Minh Road, around an hour. Hue is about 210 km away and Vinh about 250 km; the Van Ninh – Cam Lo and Bung – Van Ninh sections of the North–South expressway are open, making Hue – Dong Hoi much faster.

March to August is the dry season: the Son River runs clear, boats to Phong Nha cave run regularly and the Hang En and Dark Cave tours all operate. September to November brings central Vietnam's floods; Phong Nha cave may close when the river rises and some expeditions pause. Summer is hot but the caves are cool; bring grippy shoes and a light jacket.
