About Quang Binh

Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 former Quang Binh joined the new Quang Tri province, with its centre in Dong Hoi. People still say "Quang Binh".
The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for Quang Binh, old names, new names or a map pin all work.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Dong Hoi to Phong Nha is about 45 km. Ngang Pass and Vung Chua (resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap) are about 70 km north on Route 1.
Caves
Phong Nha, Paradise and Dark Cave are standard visits; Son Doong and En cave tours are booked separately with the operator.
Caves and beaches
Besides Phong Nha and Paradise cave, Quang Binh has Tien Son cave, Dark Cave with its zipline on the Chay River, and Mooc spring. Da Nhay, Nhat Le and Bao Ninh beaches line Highway 1. Former Quang Binh is now in the new Quang Tri, with its centre in Dong Hoi.
The western Ho Chi Minh road through Phong Nha is scenic but quiet, so drive by day. In the storm season about September–November some caves close when rivers rise.
Caves and dunes of Quang Binh
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, extended in 2015. Phong Nha cave is entered by boat on the Son River; Paradise cave runs about 31 km, with about 1 km of boardwalk for visitors. Dark Cave and the Chay River offer zipline and mud baths. Son Doong is only visited on licensed multi-day expeditions with limited places each year.
Quang Phu dunes, about 7 km from Dong Hoi, offer sandboarding and sunsets. Nhat Le and Bao Ninh beaches and Da Nhay in Bo Trach line Highway 1. Since 2025 Quang Binh is part of the new Quang Tri province, centred in Dong Hoi. Specialities include chao canh noodle soup, tapioca dumplings, dried sweet potato and grilled mackerel.
Planning notes for Quang Binh
From Dong Hoi Hue is about 170 km, around 3.5 hours by Highway 1 or expressway; Vinh is about 200 km over Ngang pass. On the way to Hue you can stop at Hien Luong bridge and Vinh Moc tunnels.

Phong Nha's boat pier is in central Son Trach; boats carry about 10–14 guests into the cave, about 2 hours round trip.
