Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 former Quang Binh joined the new Quang Tri, with its centre in Dong Hoi.
After 1 July 2025 the district level was removed; new addresses show only the commune or ward and the province or city. Locals and drivers still use old names, so for Dong Hoi write your address as you know it or share a map location.

Dong Hoi station is central; the airport is about 6 km away. Phong Nha is about 45 km, Hue about 170 km.
Nhat Le and Bao Ninh beaches
Nhat Le beach is in town; the Bao Ninh peninsula across the river has resorts. In the evening stroll the riverside and square.
Quang Binh Gate and Nhat Le beach
Quang Binh Gate is a Nguyen-era city gate in central Dong Hoi; along the Nhat Le River stands the bell tower of Tam Toa church, left after the war. Nhat Le and Bao Ninh beaches are right by the city. General Vo Nguyen Giap's tomb at Vung Chua – Yen island is about 60 km away.
Phong Nha and Vung Chua
From Dong Hoi, Phong Nha is about 45 km, an hour; leave early to see Phong Nha and Paradise caves in one day. About 60 km north is Vung Chua – Yen island, resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap; dress modestly. Dong Hoi has an airport and a railway station; the driver meets you at either.
Inside Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi has Quang Binh Quan, an old Nguyen-era gate, and Tam Toa church, of which only the bell tower survived the war and is kept as a relic. The Nhat Le riverside has a promenade and seafood eateries. Dong Hoi market sells fish, dried squid and dried sweet potato. Since 2025 Dong Hoi is the centre of the new Quang Tri province.

Dong Hoi lies between the Nhat Le River and the sea, and its small centre is quick to get around. Dong Hoi station is on the North–South railway, about 10–11 hours by train from Hanoi. The airport is about 6 km from the centre. Many guests base themselves in Dong Hoi and visit Phong Nha as a day trip, as the city has plenty of hotels and seafood places along Bao Ninh and Nhat Le. The central storm season runs about September–November, so check forecasts before cave and boat plans.
