Why does a diesel car usually cost more to maintain in Vietnam than a petrol one? Mostly because of its design. A modern diesel engine uses a very high-pressure fuel injection system, often a turbocharger, and exhaust after-treatment parts. These components are precise, sensitive to fuel quality and expensive to replace. We explain each item in plain language without quoting part prices, which vary by brand and over time.

A different design from the start

A petrol engine ignites the mixture with spark plugs. A diesel has no spark plugs: fuel is injected at very high pressure into hot compressed air and ignites by itself. That requires:

Where the extra cost comes from

        Item Diesel Petrol
Fuel filter Critical, must be changed on time, often with a water separator Simpler, rarely an issue
Injectors and pump Precision parts, costly to replace Lower pressure, easier to clean
Turbo Usually fitted Depends on model
EGR, DPF Soot builds up in city driving No DPF
Engine oil Must meet diesel specification Widely available

        Fuel quality and driving patterns

Diesel injection systems are sensitive to water and contaminants. Filling up at reputable stations and changing filters on schedule reduces risk. Short stop-and-go trips, very common in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, also keep a diesel from getting hot enough to burn off soot.

What it means for you as a renter

For renters this is mainly background on the car you drive; servicing responsibility on longer rentals is set out in the contract. Choose petrol or diesel by route and driving feel, and request it when you book. Our fleet is 2022–2025 models. For 7-seaters, see 7-seater petrol or diesel and why many 7-seaters run on diesel.

        What diesel offers in return

Diesels pull strongly and use fewer litres on long, steady, heavy-load runs (though diesel currently costs more than petrol), which is why pickups and cargo vehicles often use them. Petrol, in turn, is smoother, smells less and is simpler to service. Each suits a different kind of driving; neither is best for every trip. For longer stays, see monthly car rental.

        FAQ

        Are diesel cars more durable?

The engine block handles load well, but the injection and exhaust parts need more care. Real durability depends on maintenance.

How often should a diesel fuel filter be changed?

Follow each manufacturer's service manual. There is no single interval for every car.

Does it matter if I rent with a driver?

Less so, since fuel and tolls are included. You can still pick by feel: petrol is usually quieter, diesel pulls harder with a full load.

Who handles servicing on a long diesel rental?

It is set out in the rental contract; read it carefully or ask when you book, especially for longer rentals.

        What renters should check

        Expressway mistakes guide

Ask when the car was last serviced and when the fuel filter is due. Fill up at busy stations and keep the receipt.

If a warning light appears, stop somewhere safe and call the rental team.

        Quick answers

Does this affect my rental price? Maintenance is the owner’s cost under a normal rental.

Can I put petrol in a diesel car? No; tell the team at once if it happens.
