Renting a 7-seater in Vietnam: petrol or diesel? There is no single answer for every trip. Petrol engines are quieter, smoother and smell less in the cabin, and servicing is simpler. Diesel pulls harder on mountain passes and with heavy loads and usually uses fewer litres on highways, while diesel currently costs more than petrol per litre and servicing and parts cost more in Vietnam. At CarRentalVietnam.vn the fuel type is your choice: just request it when you book.

| Your trip | Petrol strengths | Diesel strengths |
|---|---|---|
| Family with children or older relatives | Smooth, quiet, less vibration | Pulls well with a full car |
| City driving with heavy traffic | Refined at low speed and in stop-and-go traffic | Little advantage on short city trips |
| Monthly rental, daily commuting | Simpler, cheaper servicing | Uses fewer litres if daily distances are long (diesel currently costs more per litre) |
| Long mountain passes, full loads, rough roads | Modern models cope with a reasonable load | Strong torque at low revs |
| Very high monthly mileage on highways | Lower servicing costs | Often uses fewer litres, but diesel currently costs more and servicing is pricier |
Petrol engines spark-ignite fuel and run smoothly, ideal for relaxed city driving. Diesel engines ignite fuel by compressing air at very high pressure, giving strong pulling power from low revs, but they are usually noisier and vibrate more, especially when cold or at low speed. If cabin comfort comes first, petrol 7-seaters such as the Mitsubishi Xpander or Toyota Veloz are familiar choices for Vung Tau, Phan Thiet or the Mekong Delta; for long fully loaded runs, the diesel versions of the SUVs have the pulling-power edge. Modern petrol 7-seaters also handle Da Lat's passes well when the load is reasonable and the car is properly serviced; see renting a 7-seater to Da Lat.

Exact costs depend on model, year and workshop, but diesel cars generally have more expensive items:
In return, diesel offers pulling power and low highway consumption in litres, although diesel is currently more expensive than petrol. Which matters more is your call, depending on route and driving feel.
If you drive very long distances each month, tackle many steep passes or carry full loads, diesel can be reasonable. Body-on-frame SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest are popular for long trips; fuel type depends on year and version, so ask us when booking.
With a car with driver, the price includes fuel and tolls for the quoted itinerary, the driver waits while you sightsee, and for airport pickups the driver tracks your flight and waits if it is delayed, with no waiting fee. With self-drive, fuel and tolls are not included: check the fuel type at pickup and photograph the gauge. If you ever put in the wrong fuel, do not start the engine and call us.
A 7-seater is most comfortable with 4–5 passengers plus driver and up to 4 bags; 6 passengers with light luggage. Larger groups should move up to a 16-seater or limousine; see choosing a vehicle by group size and our 7-seaters. Our fleet is 2022–2025 models, child seats are available on request, and quick-quote prices already include a 10% discount.
On highways diesel usually uses fewer litres, but diesel currently costs more than petrol (prices are adjusted periodically), and maintenance and parts tend to cost more. With a driver, fuel is already in the price.
Yes. A driver who knows the passes and on-time servicing matter more than fuel type.
