For a long trip, is petrol or diesel cheaper? Looking only at litres, diesel usually burns fewer litres at steady expressway speed—but diesel currently costs more per litre than petrol in Vietnam, so fewer litres does not always mean less money. For a renter, “cheaper” also depends on with-driver versus self-drive, trip length and cabin comfort. This article reframes the question before you choose.
Diesel engines have higher thermal efficiency and strong low-rpm pull. At steady expressway speed with a full load, diesel often uses less fuel than a similar petrol engine. The gap is clearest on large, heavy cars and very long distances. On light cars with few passengers, the difference is often smaller than people expect.
Beyond litres, count price: diesel in Vietnam currently costs more than petrol, and prices move by regulation period, so diesel’s litre advantage can shrink or disappear.
A car buyer must count multi-year maintenance, parts and depreciation. A renter pays for one trip—but fleets still bake maintenance into rental rates. In Vietnam, diesel maintenance costs more mainly because fuel-injection parts are expensive. When comparing petrol and diesel for one trip, weigh consumption, current fuel prices and ride comfort, then pick what fits you.
| Angle | Petrol | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Litres on the expressway | Slightly more | Usually fewer |
| Fuel price (current) | Lower than diesel | Higher than petrol |
| City / traffic at trip ends | Quieter, less vibration | Noisier when idling |
| Cabin smell | Less smell | More smell in jams |
| Maintenance | Simpler | Costlier parts |
If you book a car with driver, the fare already includes fuel and road tolls for the locked itinerary. You do not count litres. The better questions are space, comfort and schedule fit. See what a with-driver fare includes.
For mostly urban routes with charging access, a VinFast EV self-drive is another option to weigh.
Diesel uses fewer litres on long roads, but with higher diesel prices, fuel spend may not be lower. Petrol is quieter; diesel pulls harder under load. You choose fuel type when booking. Quick-quote form prices already apply a 10% reduction. This article does not invent prices—use /en/dat-xe.
Not necessarily. Rates depend more on model, season and route than on fuel type.
Either petrol or diesel 7-seaters handle mountain roads with a normal family load; diesel pulls harder at full load, petrol is quieter.
Yes. Year-end rates are often higher partly because of fuel cost and demand.
They can be if you plan chargers ahead. For long multi-stop days, petrol can be more flexible.

Multiply the trip distance by the car’s consumption per 100 km and the current pump price. Add tolls separately.
Air conditioning, load and speed change real consumption, so add a margin.

Which is cheaper? Depends on route and car; compare totals.
Is fuel included? With-driver quotes usually are; ask.
