Thai Nguyen by car: Tan Cuong tea hills, Nui Coc lake and on to Ba Be lake. In the 2025 reorganisation, Bac Kan province merged into Thai Nguyen, so Ba Be lake is now in Thai Nguyen too. The provincial centre is only about 75–80 km from Hanoi by expressway; Ba Be is further, around 230 km.

        Day trip or 2–3 days?

When to go, up to Tết 2027

Autumn and winter are dry and Ba Be is often misty at dawn; water is lower than in the rainy season but boats still run. Tea is picked all year, with fewer leaves at year end. Close to Tết, tea makers sell gift packs and weekend traffic into the tea area picks up.

        Choosing a vehicle

Couples or small families: a 4–5 seater or a 7-seater. Company day trips: a 29-seater. To continue round the north-east, see the north-east loop tour or Cao Bang and Ban Gioc.

Lock in Thai Nguyen dates near Tết early: Tết bookings need about a 10% deposit and quotes are always 10% off. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls; 8% VAT invoices on request.

        FAQ

Which province is Ba Be lake in now?

Since 2025 it is in Thai Nguyen province, after Bac Kan merged into it.

Can I do Ba Be as a day trip?

At about 230 km each way it would be rushed; one night there works better.

Planning Thai Nguyen and Ba Be

Car on a road by limestone hills

For a day trip, Tan Cuong tea hills and Nui Coc lake fit well. Ba Be is around 230 km from Hanoi, so plan two or three days with a homestay by the lake.

Bring cash for boat trips on the lake and a light jacket for the evening.

See Cao Bang and Ban Gioc and Tam Dao by car.

        Quick answers

Can I see Ba Be in a day? It is a long day; one night is easier.

Is the road paved? Mostly; the last part is hilly.
