Tam Dao by car: the road up to the misty hill town, sights and pass tips. Tam Dao is now in Phu Tho province (merged from Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh in 2025). The hill resort is about 80 km from Hanoi, usually 1.5–2 hours by car.

        The route

From Hanoi, head towards former Vinh Yen, then climb more than ten kilometres of mountain road with hairpin bends. See Hanoi to Tam Dao private car.

When to go, up to Tết 2027

Autumn is cool and fairly dry. From December the town is cold and often wrapped in thick fog, limiting visibility on the pass. Weekends and holidays are busy, so go up early.

        What to see

        Food and tips

Stir-fried chayote, free-range chicken and grilled food are common in Tam Dao. The town is steep with little parking at weekends; use a car park and walk. In thick fog, drivers use fog lights and go slowly.

Tam Dao road trip by car: timing the climb

        Mountain valley in morning mist

Tam Dao now sits in the enlarged Phu Tho province, which took in Vinh Phuc in July 2025. From Hanoi it is roughly 80 km, and the last stretch climbs in tight hairpins to the hill town. Go up in the morning, before afternoon fog settles, and avoid Saturday midday when weekend traffic is heaviest. Use a low gear on the way down rather than riding the brakes. See Hung Temple, Tam Dao and Mai Chau by car and car rental in Hanoi.

Give the driver two pins for a Tam Dao day trip

Send the exact place where the car can collect you in Hanoi and the entrance you want to reach in Tam Dao. If you are staying overnight, ask your hotel which road leads to its vehicle entrance. A listing may put the property name on the map without showing where a car can stop. If your accommodation sits on a slope or in a narrow lane, ask reception where larger vehicles usually leave passengers. Tell us if anyone has limited mobility or will need help getting luggage to the property. That affects the drop-off plan more than the straight-line distance shown on the map.

For a day trip, choose a first stop and a last stop instead of asking the driver to follow the group between every nearby attraction. The stone church is in the hill town, while the Tay Thien heritage area is a separate visit. If you plan to see both, allow time to leave one area and reach the other. Decide which matters most to your group before you book. Phu Tho Tourism’s Tam Dao and Tay Thien itinerary and its stone church listing are useful starting points.

Compare a town visit with a two-stop itinerary

A town-focused outing can be a good fit if your group wants lunch, a walk near the church and time for photographs. Agree on a pickup point before everyone leaves the car. On a busy weekend, the driver may need to park away from the place where passengers get out. If the group splits between lunch and sightseeing, choose one person to coordinate the return pickup and share a time that everyone can meet. Keep a spare layer with you if you expect to spend time outside.

For a trip that also includes Tay Thien, tell us which stop you want first and how much walking your group is comfortable with. A family with older relatives may prefer a longer visit at one place and a shorter stop at the other. For an overnight visit, give us the check-in and checkout dates and tell us whether you need transport for dinner or sightseeing after arrival. Having a car take you to a hotel and arranging a vehicle for local trips are two different services. We can quote either when we know the schedule.

Build a plan that can change with the weather

Ask your accommodation about local road access shortly before leaving. If visibility is poor or the road is disrupted, agree on a later departure, a shorter stop list or an alternative with the driver. Keep the return time flexible if you can, particularly when the next item is an airport check-in. We can assess a proposed schedule from your pickup and destination, but traffic and mountain conditions can change during the day.

Passengers who tend to get carsick can mention that before departure so the group can allow a suitable break. If you intend to drive yourself, check that you are comfortable with the route and have a designated place to park before setting off. If you prefer a driver, send us the passenger count, bag sizes, hotel name and whether the trip is one-way, same-day return or overnight. Ask which waiting periods, stops and parking costs are included in the written quote. Request a Tam Dao trip quote.
