        Popular rental cars compared

When you hire a car with a driver you are not buying it, so purchase price does not matter. What counts is how many people and bags fit, how comfortable it is on a long drive and how much fuel it uses. The specs below come from Carmudi and are explained from a renter's point of view. Figures vary by model year and trim.

        Quick comparison

        4 to 5 seats: Vios

A compact sedan with about 506 litres of boot space (2022 spec) and the lowest fuel use in the table. It suits city rides and airport transfers for one or two guests. For two large suitcases or more, or a long drive, step up to a 7-seater.

7 seats: Xpander, Innova or Fortuner

        Comfort pick: Carnival

The 8-seater Carnival is a class-D minivan with roomy seating, often chosen for family trips or to collect important guests at the airport.

        16 seats: Transit or Solati

Both are diesel, rear-wheel drive with a 6-speed manual. The Transit is 5,780 mm long; the Solati is 6,195 mm long and 2,760 mm tall, so it feels airier and has more luggage space. Ask the operator for the exact model year because specs differ.

        How to choose

        1. Count passengers and large suitcases.
        2. Match the route: small car for the city, high clearance or a stronger engine for mountain roads.
        3. Decide on comfort: roomy seats, headroom or economy.
