Nghe An by car: Vinh, Cua Lo beach and Kim Lien village along the North – South expressway. Nghe An kept its provincial name after 2025. Vinh is about 290–310 km from Hanoi and almost all of it is now expressway, usually 4–5 hours, so a 2–3 day weekend works.
Cars take the Phap Van – Cau Gie – Ninh Binh expressways, then the North – South expressway sections through Thanh Hoa to Dien Chau and into Vinh. Cua Lo beach is another 16–18 km from Vinh. On holidays the Hanoi exit can jam, so leave early.
Cua Lo is busiest in summer; from October the water cools and the beach empties, so people come for seafood and seaside walks rather than swimming. Expect some rain and north-east monsoon wind, so bring a windbreaker. It is an easy time to book rooms and visit sites without crowds.
Vinh is known for eel porridge and eel soup; Cua Lo for squid, crab and sea fish. Seafood is sold by weight, so ask the price before it is cooked. Dress modestly at the Kim Lien site.
Families: a 7-seater for a smooth expressway run. Pilgrim or company groups: a 29-seater. Heading further south: Ha Tinh by car, then Phong Nha.
For Nghe An you can choose a car with driver (fuel and tolls included) or self-drive, including VinFast EVs. Every quote is 10% off.
Usually 4.5–5.5 hours including breaks, depending on traffic leaving Hanoi.
The water is cold and waves can be big; it suits walks and seafood more.

Leave Hanoi early on the first day to pass the city exit before traffic builds. With most of the route on the expressway, plan one break at a service area and arrive in Vinh by lunch.
Kim Lien village, near Vinh, fits well on the morning of the second day, with Cua Lo for seafood in the afternoon. Wear modest clothes for the memorial site.

How long is the drive? Usually 4 to 5 hours from Hanoi.
Is Cua Lo busy in winter? Less so; the beach is quiet from October.
