For families in the Mekong Delta, a hospital visit in Ho Chi Minh City is less about distance than about timing: arriving early, long waits, and getting a tired patient home the same day. This guide collects the practical problems families from Cần Thơ, Vĩnh Long, Đồng Tháp, An Giang or Cà Mau run into on check-ups, follow-ups and admissions in the city, and how to plan the car around them.
Big hospitals are busiest in the morning, so many families want to arrive before queue numbers are issued. A simple rule: take the time you must be there, subtract the drive, and add 30–45 minutes for city traffic and finding a drop-off spot. Via the expressway, Cần Thơ is about 3–3.5 hours away, Vĩnh Long about 2.5–3 hours, and Cà Mau or Châu Đốc usually 4.5–5.5 hours. For early appointments, that often means leaving between 2 and 4 a.m.
For a consultation and results, a same-day return is common. If a procedure or next-day results are involved, many families stay a night near the hospital and book the return separately. Agree both options in advance so you are not hunting for a car late in the afternoon.
Discharge times are rarely exact, as paperwork and medicines take time. Book a wide time window and let the driver call the family directly. If the patient needs to lie down, say so when booking; an ordinary car is no substitute for an ambulance when medical monitoring is needed.
| Hospital | Address | Car tips |
|---|---|---|
| Chợ Rẫy Hospital | 201B Nguyễn Chí Thanh | Very busy in the morning; agree the gate that suits your department |
| Children's Hospital 1 | 341 Sư Vạn Hạnh | Bring a child seat for little ones and snacks for the wait |
| University Medical Center HCMC | 215 Hồng Bàng | Many patients book ahead; time arrival to the appointment |
All are in congested central districts. Ask the hospital which gate serves your department so the driver drops you there and the patient avoids a long walk.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 3:30 a.m. | Pick-up at home in Cần Thơ |
| 4:00–6:30 | Cần Thơ – Mỹ Thuận – Trung Lương – HCMC expressways, short break |
| 6:30–7:00 | Into the city, drop-off at the hospital gate |
| 7:00–12:00 | Queue number, consultation, tests; driver waits in a nearby car park |
| 12:00–1:00 p.m. | Lunch, rest in the air-conditioned car |
| 1:00–3:00 | Results and pharmacy |
| 3:00 | Head home ahead of the evening rush |
If results come the next day, consider a night near the hospital rather than two round trips.
| Condition | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Walks normally, 1–2 relatives | 4–5 seat | Compact, easy at hospital gates |
| Older patient needing to recline, 3–4 relatives | 7 seat or 9-seat limousine | Reclining seats, easy access |
| Folding wheelchair | 7 seat | Boot holds the chair plus bags |
A passenger car is not an ambulance. Patients needing continuous monitoring, oxygen or a stretcher must use the hospital's medical transport.
Some families from Phú Quốc, Cà Mau or Rạch Giá fly to Tân Sơn Nhất to save time. Book an airport pick-up: the driver tracks the flight, waits through delays with no airport waiting fee, and goes straight to the hospital. The central hospitals are not far from Tân Sơn Nhất, but rush hour is heavy. The Mekong Delta has no passenger rail, so where no suitable flight exists, the car is the main option.
For longer treatment, families often rent a room near the hospital. Rather than keeping a car for days, book by leg: one trip up, short hops by hourly hire in between, and one trip home at discharge. Ask us about hourly city hire for follow-up visits and collecting results.
Many chronic conditions need monthly or periodic follow-ups. Once you know the appointments, book the car for the whole course, keeping the same driver who knows the hospital route and the patient's needs. You avoid hunting for a car each time, especially in the busy year-end months.
Every quote gets 10% off, and chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls, making the whole course easy to budget.
In the last lunar month, roads from the Mekong Delta to the city are busier than usual, especially Friday afternoons and Monday mornings. Many hospitals reduce clinics over the Tết 2027 holiday from 4 to 10 February. If you need a visit before Tết, book it in early January and the car at the same time. The first days after Tết are crowded; leave earlier than usual. Tết bookings need a deposit of about 10%.
If the patient needs a wheelchair, crutches or cushions, tell us so we can send a car with a big boot. Large hospitals are busy in the morning; agree pickup at a side gate or a specific spot to save walking.
After an endoscopy, a drip or a minor procedure, patients are often tired and want to recline. Tell us in advance so the driver can set up a roomy seat, a pillow and gentle air-conditioning, drive smoothly and stop whenever needed. If a follow-up is scheduled, book it too and keep the same driver who knows the way.
