A Ha Tien visa run makes sense for foreigners staying on Phú Quốc, in Rạch Giá or in Hà Tiên itself. The gate accepts the Vietnamese e-visa, it is close to Hà Tiên town, and the Cambodian side is Prek Chak in Kampot province. The key difference from Mộc Bài is that Prek Chak does not accept entry on a Cambodian e-visa, so you need a visa on arrival or a Cambodian visa exemption.
Rules can change and only officers decide on entry. We provide the car and driver; we do not handle visas and cannot promise any result. The general rules are in our visa run by private car guide.
Updated 21 October 2026. Written by the Car Rental Vietnam operations team from experience running trips to Tây Ninh and the Mekong Delta, checked against current legal texts. Immigration rules can change; check the official portals before you travel.
On the e-visa list in Resolution 127/NQ-CP the gate appears as "Hà Tiên International Border Gate, Kiên Giang province". Locals and maps often call it the Xà Xía gate. Since 1 July 2025 Kiên Giang has been part of An Giang, so the gate is now in An Giang province, and the government's announcement of Resolution 389/NQ-CP writes "Kiên Giang (now An Giang)". When you apply for a Vietnamese e-visa, pick "Hà Tiên" from the land-port list.
Phú Quốc is now a special zone of An Giang. Its own visa exemption for direct arrivals on the island does not cover entry at the Hà Tiên land gate. For that you need an e-visa or a valid nationwide exemption.
The gate is only a few kilometres from town, so this is the shortest trip. The car collects you at your hotel, waits on the Vietnamese side and brings you back. Without crowds, it fits into a morning.
Rạch Giá to Hà Tiên is about 90 km along National Route 80, usually around two hours. A same-day return works with an early start; aim to be back before dark.
There is no road link from Phú Quốc to the mainland, so you take a fast ferry to Hà Tiên. Journey times and schedules are set by the ferry operators and depend on sea conditions. Our car meets you at Hà Tiên pier, drives to the gate, waits, and takes you back to the pier in time for your return sailing. Because of ferry times and weather this is a long day. Book return ferry tickets first and send us the times.
Ho Chi Minh City is over 300 km from Hà Tiên. A visa run there and back in one day is unrealistic and unsafe, so we do not offer it.
The border table published by the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin, updated 3 October 2026, lists Prek Chak (Kampot) as open but not accepting entry on a Cambodian e-visa; exit is allowed. Cambodia's foreign ministry says visas on arrival remain available at international land checkpoints, and Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism lists Prek Chak among the gates issuing them.
In practice:
If you must hold a visa before travelling, Mộc Bài–Bavet is the only crossing on the Vietnamese border that accepts the Cambodian e-visa, but it is a very long way from the Mekong coast.
This gate usually sees fewer tourists than Mộc Bài, but processing times are still hard to predict. Arrive in the morning and allow slack, especially if you need to make a ferry back to Phú Quốc.
| Step | Plan | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Early ferry from Phú Quốc to Hà Tiên | Book returns in advance and send us the times |
| 2 | Car meets you at Hà Tiên pier | The driver waits at the exit, with no waiting fee if the boat is late |
| 3 | Drive to the gate and clear both sides | The car waits on the Vietnamese side |
| 4 | Lunch in Hà Tiên | Re-check your stamp and stay date |
| 5 | Back to the pier for the return ferry | Arrive well before departure |
In rough seas sailings can be retimed or cancelled. Watch the operator's notices and tell us at once so we can move the pickup. If your stay is close to its end, do not leave the trip to the last day, because one cancelled sailing could make you overstay.
Large bags can stay in the car: a 4–5 seater takes about 3 suitcases and a 7-seater about 4. Keep documents, money and your phone on you.
| Factor | Hà Tiên (Xà Xía) | Tịnh Biên |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | People on Phú Quốc or in Hà Tiên and Rạch Giá | People in Châu Đốc, Long Xuyên or Cần Thơ |
| Cambodian side | Prek Chak (Kampot) | Phnom Den (Takeo) |
| Cambodian e-visa entry | Not accepted | Not accepted |
| Vietnamese e-visa | Yes (choose "Hà Tiên") | Yes (choose "Tịnh Biên") |
| Depends on ferries | Yes, from Phú Quốc | No |
Both need a Cambodian visa on arrival or a Cambodian exemption. From the island, Hà Tiên is far closer. From Cần Thơ, Tịnh Biên usually makes more sense, and we cover it, along with Vĩnh Xương, in a separate guide.
Staying one night in Hà Tiên takes the pressure off in a few situations: the only convenient ferry from Phú Quốc arrives late, rough seas are forecast, you travel with young children or older relatives, or you want to be at the gate as early as possible the next morning. In that case the car meets your ferry the afternoon before, takes you to your hotel, then drives you to the gate in the morning and waits. It is still a single same-day crossing, just with a night's rest before it.
If you want sightseeing as well, Phù Dung pagoda, Tô Châu hill or Mũi Nai beach are easy additions once your formalities are done. Tell us in advance so the driver can plan the day. If you are flying to the island first, see our Phú Quốc airport transfer guide. Travellers who use the ferry often recommend checking the operator's page the evening before and again on the morning of travel, as announcements about weather changes can appear at short notice.
Each traveller, including children, needs their own passport and their own valid basis to re-enter Vietnam. Check every family member's e-visa or exemption before booking ferries. A child seat is available on request. Groups sharing a car usually return together, so agree in advance what happens if one person is held up. Snacks and water help a lot if a queue forms in the midday heat.
We run 4–5 seaters, 7-seaters, 16-seaters and 9-seat Limousines, all 2022–2025 models. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls, every quote gets 10% off, and an 8% VAT invoice is available on request. We do not publish fixed prices. Send the quick-quote form with your pickup (Hà Tiên pier, your hotel or Rạch Giá), date and passengers. Rules can change; check evisa.gov.vn and Cambodian official sources in the week before you travel.
Yes. Official documents say Hà Tiên International Border Gate; locals call it Xà Xía. It is now in An Giang province.
No. According to the Royal Embassy of Cambodia's table updated 3 October 2026, Prek Chak does not accept e-visa entry; use a visa on arrival or a Cambodian exemption.
Yes, if ferry times and weather cooperate: ferry to Hà Tiên, car from the pier, wait at the gate, back to the pier.
Phú Quốc's own exemption applies to direct arrivals on the island. At the Hà Tiên land gate you need an e-visa or a valid nationwide exemption.
No. The car waits on the Vietnamese side.
We do not advise it. It is over 300 km each way, and we do not take this booking.
