A mountain trip in a rental means learning an unfamiliar road and an unfamiliar car together. Consider your driving experience, weather and daylight before committing to the route. A taller vehicle cannot compensate for uncertainty on bends or steep descents.

Keep time pressure away from the mountain section

Leave a margin between the expected end of the mountain section and the rental return time. That makes it easier to stop for poor visibility or fatigue. Ask how the actual vehicle handles lower gears, downhill assistance or regeneration rather than copying settings from a previous car.

        Before the climb

Get a feel for the car on the flat

A few dozen kilometres on level road lets you settle into the brakes, throttle and the size of the car before the bends begin.

        Check the weather

Rain and mountain fog cut visibility and make the surface slippery; on a poor day it is worth setting off a little later.

        Going uphill

        Keep a steady pace

Hold a low gear and an even speed, and leave plenty of room behind slow lorries.

Overtake only with a clear view

Never pass on blind bends, over solid lines or where a no-overtaking sign is posted.

        Coming down

Let the gears do the work

On long descents please select a low gear (or L or B mode, depending on the car) so the engine or regenerative system helps slow you, rather than riding the brakes until they overheat.

        Breaks and breakdowns

        Rest at proper stopping places

Pass driving takes real concentration. Please take breaks at viewpoints or wide lay-bys, never on a bend or blind crest, where stopping is prohibited.

Match the mountain trip to the driver's experience

City driving experience does not automatically prepare someone for long descents, narrow passing places or fog. A chauffeured trip may suit a fixed holiday schedule better if the driver lacks confidence. For self-drive, collect early enough to learn the assigned vehicle before reaching mountain roads.

Habits for your first mountain pass

Car on a hairpin mountain road

Use a lower gear on long descents instead of holding the brake, keep right on blind bends and sound the horn briefly before tight corners. Stop only at wide, safe pull-outs.

Start early so the pass is driven in daylight, and turn back or wait if fog or heavy rain sets in.
