The handover record should capture the car's condition before you leave. Look beyond scratches: inspect tyres and warning lights, and try the basic controls with the staff. A customer's walk-around does not replace the rental company's maintenance checks.

Photograph each side, wheels, glass, cabin and dashboard mileage and fuel or battery level. Add close-ups of existing damage to the signed record. Resolve tyre, brake or warning-light concerns before accepting the vehicle rather than reporting them after driving away.
Look at the tyres, glass, lights and any fluid beneath the vehicle, and photograph existing damage. Ask the team to explain warning lights and check fluid levels using the actual vehicle manual. Never open a hot cooling system or add an unconfirmed fluid.
Try the brakes, steering, lights and wipers at low speed with the team. Ask for inspection before accepting unexplained noises, pulling, vibration or warnings. On an EV, do not touch orange cables or high-voltage components.
Take close-ups and wider views so existing damage can be located, then record it alongside fuel or charge level. Check keys, supplied accessories, documents and the support number before signing. A clear handover record makes the return inspection easier for both parties.
Ask the handover team to demonstrate the checks and explain any visible warning instead of accepting a general assurance. Do not dismantle or touch unfamiliar systems. Record the inspection, condition photos and support contact. If an unexplained symptom remains, request inspection or another vehicle before beginning the journey.

Walk around the car once filming slowly, then check the tyres for cuts and pressure, test the lights, horn, wipers and air conditioning, and note fuel or battery level and mileage.
Ask where the spare wheel, jack and documents are kept and how to reach roadside help. Keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
See pickup and return checklist and what to do after an incident.
Should I check the oil myself? Ask the staff to show the level at handover.
What if a warning light comes on? Stop safely and call the rental team.
