Ma Pi Leng Pass on the Dong Van – Meo Vac road in Ha Giang looks down on the Nho Que River. The pass is narrow with many bends, so travel with a driver experienced in mountain roads.
A pass on the stone plateau
Ma Pi Leng runs about 20 km on Highway 4C along a cliff face, above the Tu San canyon and the jade-green Nho Que River. The road was cut by hand by youth volunteers and local ethnic communities in 1959–1965 and is called the Happiness Road. The summit has a viewpoint and memorial house; nearby is a rock ledge many people climb out onto for photos, which is risky in strong wind.

Cars for a multi-day Ha Giang trip
A Hanoi – Ha Giang – Dong Van – Meo Vac loop usually takes 3–4 days and about 800–900 km round trip. High-clearance 7-seaters suit small groups; 16-seaters suit groups of 10–14. The pass ends at the former Meo Vac town, in a valley among limestone peaks. Its Sunday morning market sells horses, pigs and corn wine. From Meo Vac you can carry on to Bao Lac in Cao Bang or loop back to Yen Minh via Mau Due.

The route from Hanoi
Hanoi to the former Ha Giang town is about 300 km via the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway and Tuyen Quang, or the Hanoi – Tuyen Quang expressway, about 6 hours. From there to Dong Van is about 150 km on Highway 4C via Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Yen Minh and Tham Ma slope, 4–5 hours of continuous mountain road. The usual plan is 3 days, 2 nights: day one to Ha Giang, day two up to Dong Van via the Vuong family mansion, day three over Ma Pi Leng to Meo Vac and back.
