Quang Tri is the land of the war memorials: the Citadel, the Hien Luong bridge over the Ben Hai river, the Vinh Moc tunnels and Truong Son national cemetery. They are close together and the roads are mostly flat, which makes a two-day self-drive from Dong Ha or Hue straightforward. This guide gives a timed plan, distances for each leg, how to behave at memorial sites, and an extension to Phong Nha, now part of the same province after the 2025 merger.
Updated 21 October 2026. Written by the Car Rental Vietnam operations team from day-to-day dispatch experience and checked against current regulations. Traffic rules can change; check again before you travel.
Most visitors collect the car in Dong Ha (which has a railway station) or in Hue and drive up. Hue to Dong Ha is about 70 km on National Road 1.
| Leg | Distance |
|---|---|
| Dong Ha – Quang Tri Citadel | about 12 km |
| Dong Ha – Hien Luong bridge | about 22 km |
| Hien Luong – Vinh Moc tunnels | about 13 km |
| Dong Ha – Truong Son cemetery | about 35 km |
| Dong Ha – Khe Sanh (Route 9) | about 65 km |
| Dong Ha – Dong Hoi | about 95 km |
| Dong Hoi – Phong Nha | about 45 km |
Figures are rounded for the usual roads; map apps may differ slightly.
07:30 Collect the car in Dong Ha and drive south to Quang Tri Citadel. See the memorial site and the Thach Han riverbank.
10:00 Back on National Road 1 north to Hien Luong – Ben Hai. Park at the site car park and walk across the bridge.
11:30 Head to the coast for lunch around Cua Tung.
13:30 Vinh Moc tunnels. The passages are narrow and low, so wear flat shoes; anyone uneasy in tight spaces can stay with the museum section.
16:00 Back to Dong Ha for the night.
In the morning visit Truong Son national cemetery, resting place of thousands of fallen soldiers. Then follow Route 9 west to Khe Sanh, with Ta Con airbase if you wish. Route 9 is a hill road with heavy trucks; keep your distance and do not overtake on bends. Return to Dong Ha in the afternoon or continue to Hue to return the car.
Since 1 July 2025 the former Quang Binh province has been part of the new Quang Tri, so Phong Nha is now in the same province. Take National Road 1 north to Dong Hoi, then inland to Phong Nha. Cave tickets are usually sold by time slot; buy ahead and aim to reach the pier about 30 minutes before your slot. You can stay in Phong Nha and return the car in Dong Hoi if agreed in advance.
The Citadel, Truong Son and the cemeteries are not attractions in the usual sense; many families come to find and honour relatives.
Roughly September to November is the central region's storm season, and some riverside stretches can flood. Watch the forecast and postpone Route 9 in heavy rain. Summer brings the hot, dry Lao wind; do outdoor visits early or late and carry water. National Road 1 through Quang Tri carries many trucks and long-distance coaches, especially at night.
Dong Ha – Citadel – Hien Luong – Vinh Moc is short and flat, so self-driving is easy. Still, a car with driver suits some trips better: larger groups needing a 16-seater or more, families with older members who want to rest completely, or travel in storm season if you do not know central Vietnam's roads. Local drivers know which stretches flood, where to park at each site and opening hours. Chauffeur prices include fuel and tolls, unlike self-drive prices.
In 1972 the Citadel was the scene of an 81-day battle. Today it is a memorial park with a central monument, a museum and remains of the walls and moat. On the Thach Han river there is a landing where groups float flowers in remembrance.
The 17th parallel divided the country under the 1954 Geneva Accords. The Hien Luong bridge has been restored, with flagpoles and exhibition houses on both banks. Walking across the bridge is the heart of the visit.
Villagers dug a multi-level tunnel system to shelter from bombing and lived underground for years. Part of the tunnels is open, leading out to an exit facing the sea.
Resting place of more than ten thousand fallen soldiers, arranged by home province. The grounds are wide and quiet; take time and walk slowly.
With three days you can collect in Hue and return in Dong Hoi (agreed in advance):
Dong Hoi has an airport and a station, so finishing there saves driving back to Hue.
Dong Ha: mid-range hotels near National Road 1, handy for early starts. Try snakehead fish porridge and banh uot with grilled pork.
Cua Tung, Cua Viet: calm beaches with guesthouses and small resorts; fresh seafood in summer.
Phong Nha: homestays and hotels along the Son river, usually with parking. Hill chicken and stream fish.
In summer and on holidays the coast and Phong Nha fill early; book rooms before fixing the car plan.
If a warning light comes on, stop somewhere safe and call for help; do not attempt repairs on a pass.
Many families come to Quang Tri to find and visit relatives' graves at Truong Son, the Route 9 cemetery or district cemeteries. Some suggestions:
For searches covering several cemeteries, a self-drive car lets the family set its own pace. For a large family with older members, add a car with driver from Hue or Dong Ha.
Self-drive prices are per day and do not include fuel, tolls or parking at sites. Return the car with the fuel level you received. Traffic fines recorded by camera during the rental are the renter's responsibility under the contract. Before booking, read the terms on deposit, documents to show and any mileage limit.
Self-drive prices do not include fuel; every quote gets 10% off and an 8% VAT invoice is available. Model years 2022–2025. The driver needs a licence valid under Vietnamese law; foreign visitors should check theirs before booking. See self-drive rental in Quang Tri, or if you would rather be driven, book a car from Hue to the Citadel. Heading further south afterwards? See Vietnam's scenic roads.
Day 1 the Citadel, Hien Luong and Vinh Moc; day 2 Truong Son and Route 9, or Phong Nha.
