What should you check before a self-drive expressway trip in Vietnam? A smooth expressway run is often decided in the ten minutes before the car rolls. On the expressway you cannot stop at will to adjust mirrors, find documents, or top up fuel. Below is a checklist in order: documents, the car, fuel, tolls, the route, and what to remember on the road.

| Item | Check | Done |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | Driving licence, rental vehicle papers; foreign visitors: IDP and passport | |
| Tyres | Pressure, tread, spare tyre, jack | |
| Lights, wipers | Headlights, brake lights, indicators, washer fluid | |
| Fuel / battery | Fill up or charge fully before joining the expressway | |
| Tolls | Working electronic toll (ETC) tag | |
| Route | Offline map, exits, rest stops |
Carry a valid driving licence and the vehicle papers handed over by the rental company. Foreign visitors need an IDP and passport under current rules; see foreign visitors self-driving in Vietnam. Keep papers where you can reach them—not in the boot.
Fill up before joining the expressway and plan stops at rest areas. If you rent a VinFast EV for self-drive, check the charge level and find chargers on the route in advance. For diesel, use the correct DO nozzle; for petrol, use the grade marked on the filler cap. Fuel type is chosen when you book.
Many expressway corridors use automatic tolls. Confirm with the rental company that the car’s ETC tag is active and ask how road fees are settled on return. Do not enter an ETC lane without a working tag. See also the guide on ETC tolls for rental cars.
Save an offline map and remember the exit name before yours so you can change lanes early. Pick rest stops about every two hours of driving; the list is in Vietnam expressway rest stops 2026.
Prefer not to handle the whole checklist yourself? You can book a car with driver: the fare already includes fuel and road tolls, and the driver knows the corridor and rest stops. Fleet model years 2022–2025; current quotes include a 10% reduction.
Documents, tyres, fuel, and the ETC tag.
Follow signs on each corridor; commonly 60–120 km/h; temporary sections may be lower.
At rest stops—not on the emergency lane.
Confirm with the rental company at handover, including how fees are paid on return.

Tyres, lights, fuel, ETC tag and warning triangle. Set the destination and your exit.
Plan a rest stop every two hours.
See documents and expressway guide.
Toll paid how? ETC.
Breakdown? Emergency lane, hazard lights.
