Many renters only discover the car has no working toll tag when the barrier stays down at the first expressway gate.
Electronic toll collection (ETC) is standard on Vietnam's expressways, and renters need to know how it works. This guide explains the fine for missing a tag, what to ask a rental company and how chauffeured trips handle tolls.

Driving a vehicle without an ETC tag into an ETC-only toll lane carries a fine of VND 2 to 3 million (Ministry of Public Security). A VETC tag works at all ETC stations, including those operated by VETC and VDTC (VETC).
Our drivers handle tolls so you do not have to worry about lanes or balances. Ask for tolls to be listed as included in your quote, and see what a quote usually covers.
A self-drive renter who enters an ETC-only lane without a tag may face a fine and delays at the barrier. Before pickup, ask to see the tag on the windscreen and the balance. If you are in a chauffeured car, ask that tolls be listed as included so the final bill matches the quote.
Tip from Car Rental Vietnam: Photograph the toll tag on the windscreen and the balance screen at pickup; if an odd charge appears later, you have something to check it against.
VND 2 to 3 million for entering an ETC-only lane without a tag.
It works at all ETC stations including VETC and VDTC.
Depends on the quote; ask for it in writing.
Rather not deal with tolls yourself? Send your pickup point, group size and dates; quotes include the driver's wage and road tolls, and our team confirms everything with you before you book.

Ask staff to confirm the tag is active and has enough balance, and how tolls are settled after the rental.
Use the lane marked for ETC and keep a safe distance at the gate.

Who pays tolls? It depends on the contract.
What if the gate stays down? Follow staff instructions.
Ask the rental company whether the tag is active for the vehicle’s plate and whether its linked payment arrangement is ready to cover the trip. A tag on the windscreen is a useful visual check. The company can also confirm the status in its toll provider’s system without showing you private account details. Repeat this check if the vehicle offered at pickup differs from the one named in the reservation. If you plan to drive several expressway sections, tell the provider the approximate route and dates so it can explain what to expect.
Ask how tolls appear on the final bill. Some agreements include specified road tolls in the rental quote. Other arrangements may charge for transactions recorded during the rental. For an actual-cost arrangement, confirm whether a separate fee applies, when you will receive the statement and what happens if a charge appears after return. Get the agreed approach in a message or on the rental paperwork. The toll account and the customer’s invoice are different records, so ask for enough detail to match them.
Slow down on approach, follow the signs and leave space behind the vehicle ahead. If the barrier remains down, follow the directions of toll staff and use the assistance channel provided at the station if one is available. Contact the rental company when you can do so safely. Tell it the plate, station and time so it can check the transaction. Keep any receipt if staff direct you to another approved payment method. That receipt can help if a matching charge later appears in the rental statement.
Before continuing, establish which contact will help if the same issue happens again. On a one-way rental, this may be the pickup branch rather than the office taking the return. Save the contact details before the trip if you will be driving through areas where your phone may lose data service.
For a round trip, expect the outbound and return entries to have different timestamps even when the road looks the same. Match each available station or road segment to your route and rental period. If a charge appears before pickup, after return or twice for an apparently identical passage, ask the company for the transaction details and check any receipt you received at the station. A toll payment and a traffic violation are separate matters. Ask which type of charge is being discussed and what record supports it.
For self-drive, ask Car Rental Vietnam how toll transactions will be reported for your booking. For a private car with a driver, share your exact pickup and drop-off addresses, any stops and whether you need the car to return the same day. Request a written quote showing how road tolls are treated. If you plan a detour or a second drop-off, ask whether the original quote covers it before departure.
Check the booking options for your route.
