Most expressway fines come not from deliberate rule-breaking but from a few flustered minutes: a missed exit, a forgotten ETC tag or a stop in the wrong place.
Most expressway trips go smoothly, and a few simple habits make them smoother still. Here are ten common slips visitors can easily avoid, with reference figures from official summaries.

Travelling with a local professional removes most of this list from your to-do. See car rental with driver and the reference table.
Tip from Car Rental Vietnam: Before joining the expressway, note the name of your exit and the one before it; when you see the earlier sign, you have time to change lanes calmly.
Continue to the next exit.
60 km/h unless signs say otherwise.
At rest areas.
Please check the official text for your own case.
Rather not keep this list in your head? Send your pickup point, group size and dates; quotes include the driver's wage and road tolls, and our team confirms everything with you before you book.

Before entering the expressway, check the ETC tag, fuel level and the exit name. Keep to the right lanes unless overtaking.
If you miss an exit, continue to the next one; never reverse.
See following distance table and night and rain tips.
Can I stop on the shoulder? Only in an emergency.
Is a tag required? Most expressways use electronic toll.
Save the exact pickup and destination pins, the name of the exit you expect to use, and one place where your group can take a break. A hotel name alone can be ambiguous if several properties have similar names. Confirm the entrance the hotel uses for cars, especially if your last stop is a resort with more than one gate. If the trip starts at an airport, agree whether the destination pin is for the terminal pickup lane or a separate meeting area. Download the route while you have an internet connection.
Think through the first hour in the car. If you pick up the vehicle right after a flight, allow time to get familiar with the controls and arrange the luggage before leaving. Ask where the hazard light switch is and save the rental company’s assistance number. Give a passenger responsibility for navigation or set voice guidance before driving. Tell the group that requests for photos or changes to the itinerary can wait until the next designated stop.
Suppose your phone reroutes you near a junction because it thinks a secondary road is faster. Read the road signs and decide whether you have enough room to reach the suggested lane safely. If you are already beyond the exit, keep going and let the app calculate a new route. Do not reverse, stop to check your phone, or cut across the marked divider. If a passenger is navigating, ask them to give early instructions using the exit name and direction. That is usually easier to act on than a last-second instruction to turn.
When joining the expressway, signal and yield to traffic already on the main carriageway. Use an acceleration lane if one is provided. If the road layout or traffic feels unfamiliar, plan a route with fewer complicated junctions where practical. Keep the schedule flexible enough to absorb a missed exit, a queue at a toll point or an extra break.
A family travelling with children or older relatives can choose a designated stop before departure and keep an alternative off the expressway. Confirm that any place you pin is reachable from your direction of travel. A petrol station may appear close on the map but sit on the other side of the expressway or outside an interchange. Add time for meals and toilet breaks when sharing your planned arrival with a hotel. If your group needs a particular stop, include it in the itinerary rather than leaving the decision until everyone is tired.
Car Rental Vietnam can help compare a self-drive rental and a private car with a driver for your itinerary. Send the pickup time, number of travellers, luggage sizes and any planned stops. If your trip is a same-day return, include the time you expect to leave the destination and ask how waiting or a route change would affect the quote. If you are carrying bulky bags or travelling with a child, share that before choosing a vehicle.
