Sa Pa by car: where to go, when, and mountain-road tips once you are there. Sa Pa is now Sa Pa ward in Lao Cai province (merged from Lao Cai and Yen Bai in 2025). This guide covers sightseeing around Sa Pa by car over 2–3 days. For the drive up from Hanoi, see our Hanoi to Sa Pa private car guide.
For longer walks, see our Sa Pa trekking tour.
October and November are usually dry with good visibility. December and January are cold, with frost and occasional ice at high points such as O Quy Ho and Fansipan; drivers slow down and may change plans if roads are slippery. Around Tết (the first day is Saturday 6 February 2027), Sa Pa is busy, prices are higher than usual and bookings usually need a deposit of about 10%.
Look for cold-water salmon and sturgeon, Hmong mustard greens and grilled food at the night market. Bring warm clothes; evenings get cold.
Families of 4–6: a 7-seater. Larger groups: a 16-seater. Pickup in Hanoi or at the airport: see Noi Bai airport transfers.
Booking Sa Pa: chauffeur quotes already cover fuel and tolls and get 10% off; vehicles are 2022–2025 models. Need an 8% VAT invoice? Tell us when you book.
Since 2025, Sa Pa ward is in the new Lao Cai province.
Only if you are used to mountain passes; on frosty days a driver who knows the route is safer.

Plan one area per half day, such as Cat Cat and the town in the morning, then a valley drive in the afternoon. Parking near popular villages is limited, so the driver may drop you at the entrance and wait nearby.
Mornings are often clearer; bring layers, rain gear and shoes with grip for village paths.
See Hanoi to Sapa by private car and Sapa trekking.
How many days are enough? Two to three days.
Can the car go to every village? Some paths are walk-only.
