Planning Hanoi to Sapa by private car? The Noi Bai to Lao Cai expressway has cut the journey a lot, but the final mountain road still needs a careful driver. Here is what to expect and what to confirm.

Sapa is about 300 km from Hanoi. Most of the journey is on the Noi Bai to Lao Cai expressway, then a mountain road climbs from Lao Cai city to the town. Allow five to six hours including a rest stop.
The final stretch has bends and, in cooler months, low cloud. A driver familiar with the road is a real advantage. If you plan to see Fansipan, keep the afternoon free in case the weather turns.
Two or three guests fit a 4-seater. Families choose a 7-seater, and groups travelling with bags often prefer a limousine van or a 16-seater.
