Nam Dinh by car: Tran temple, Phu Day, seaside churches and the Xuan Thuy bird season. On 1 July 2025 Nam Dinh and Ha Nam merged into Ninh Binh province, though many still call this area Nam Dinh. It is only about 90–100 km from Hanoi, fine as a day trip or one night.
Take the Phap Van – Cau Gie – Ninh Binh expressway and turn off towards Nam Dinh city, or use Highway 21A. Coastal spots such as Hai Hau and Giao Thuy are a few dozen km further, so two days is more relaxed.
October to February is dry and cool, good for temples and churches. It is also the migratory bird season at Xuan Thuy National Park on the Red River mouth. In late December the churches are decorated for Christmas and evenings get busy. The Tran temple seal ceremony is after Tết, outside this guide.
Nam Dinh beef pho is the classic breakfast. The coastal churches look best in afternoon light; keep quiet if a service is on. Xuan Thuy is large, and birdwatching means a boat or a walk with park staff.
Family day trips: a 4–5 seater or 7-seater. Pilgrim groups: a 29-seater. Old Ninh Binh is next door: see Ninh Binh road trip or Hanoi to Ninh Binh private car.
Booking Nam Dinh: chauffeur quotes already cover fuel and tolls and get 10% off; vehicles are 2022–2025 models. Need an 8% VAT invoice? Tell us when you book.
Since 1 July 2025 the former Nam Dinh area is part of Ninh Binh province.
Yes if you drop a stop or two; add a night to include Xuan Thuy.

Wear modest clothes for temples and churches. For Xuan Thuy, ask about tide times and bring binoculars in the bird season.
On the coast, stay in Hai Hau or Giao Thuy for one night to avoid driving back after dark.
