Renting a self-drive car by the month in Ho Chi Minh City suits people who need a car every day for a few months but are not ready to buy one: new arrivals on a work assignment, families waiting for a new car, project engineers, or anyone who wants to live with a car before purchasing. Here is what to check before you sign a long-term contract, so costs are clear from day one and returning the car is painless.
Daily rental works for short trips. If you need a car for three or four weeks or more, a monthly package is simpler: one contract, one handover, one service schedule. Typical cases:
Not comfortable driving in rush hour? Compare options in self-drive vs car rental with driver.
The deposit amount and method are written into the contract. Ask when it is refunded, what can be deducted, and how long the refund takes. Full list: documents for self-drive rental.
Many monthly contracts include a standard mileage with a charge for extra kilometres. Estimate your real use first: daily commute, weekend trips and any trips out of town. A return trip from HCMC to Vung Tau alone is around 200 km, so if you travel often, say so up front and get the right package.
A car used all month will be due for an oil change and checks. Agree who books the service, who pays for scheduled maintenance, and whether a replacement car is provided while yours is in the workshop. At CarRentalVietnam.vn, every contract is detailed, sent to you to read first, signed by both parties, and an 8% VAT invoice is issued on request.
| Item | Note |
|---|---|
| Fuel or charging | Based on distance; return at the agreed fuel or battery level. |
| Tolls | Mostly collected automatically via the car's ETC tag; ask how it is reconciled. |
| Parking | Apartments and offices in central HCMC usually charge monthly car parking. |
| Cleaning | Return the car as clean as you received it. |
| Traffic camera fines | The renter is responsible for violations during the rental period. |
More on fines: camera fines and rental cars in Vietnam. Photograph the odometer and fuel gauge at every handover.
For one or two people commuting, a 4-seater is easier to park and cheaper to run; it takes up to about 3 suitcases. For a family of 4–5 or frequent trips home with luggage, a 7-seater (up to about 4 suitcases) is more comfortable. See monthly rental: 4-seater or 7-seater.
On fuel, choose petrol or diesel to suit your driving and tell us when you book: petrol is quieter in town and simpler to service; diesel pulls harder and uses fewer litres on long runs, though diesel currently costs more than petrol and servicing costs more in Vietnam. Electric VinFast VF5 and VF7 are also available as self-drive if you can charge at home or work.
Our fleet is 2022–2025 models, inspected before every handover. Browse self-drive cars and monthly packages on monthly car rental. Prices in the quick-quote form already include a 10% discount.
