Rent a self-drive car by the month or buy one? The answer is not in the sticker price but in the total cost of ownership over the time you will actually use the car. We do not quote fixed car prices here because they change by model, year and timing. Instead, here is a simple framework: plug in your own numbers and decide.

What owning a car really costs

        What a monthly rental costs

Most fixed costs above are built into the rental. You pay the monthly fee, fuel or charging, tolls, parking and cleaning, plus excess mileage if your contract has a limit. The big advantage is flexibility: stop when you no longer need the car, switch size when your family changes, never worry about resale. See monthly car rental.

        A framework you fill in

        Buy Rent monthly
On-road price − expected resale value (= depreciation) Monthly fee × months
        + Insurance × years (included)
        + Road fees, inspections (included)
+ Servicing and repairs (usually included; check the contract)
        + Parking × months + Parking × months
+ Interest or opportunity cost —
        + Fuel + Fuel

Divide each column by the number of months to get your real monthly cost. Buying and reselling within a short period rarely pays off because first-year depreciation is usually high.

There is also a third option: a monthly car with a driver. See self-drive vs with driver.

        A note on fuel

Whether you rent or buy, for city driving in Vietnam a petrol engine is usually the easier choice: smooth, simple to service, with common and cheaper parts than diesel fuel systems. Diesel mainly pays off for very high long-distance mileage or heavy loads.

        How to start

Rent for one month, record your real mileage and costs, then fill in the framework above. You will have your own data instead of guesses. Browse self-drive cars; prices in the quick-quote form already include a 10% discount.

        FAQ

Is renting for a year cheaper than buying?

It depends on your mileage, parking cost and expected resale value. For shorter periods renting usually wins because you avoid first-year depreciation.

        Is the contract clear?

The contract details the car, term, price and each party's responsibilities; it is sent to you first and signed by both parties, with an 8% VAT invoice on request.

Should I rent an EV before buying one?

If you are unsure about charging and range, renting a VF5 or VF7 self-drive for a while is the best test.
