Da Lat by car: a long drive that is worth it

Booking a Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat car rental with driver is the most comfortable way to reach the highlands, because the road still needs some planning. Da Lat now belongs to the new Lam Dong province, formed in 2025 from Lam Dong, Dak Nong and Binh Thuan, and its centre is split into wards such as Xuan Huong – Da Lat, Lam Vien – Da Lat and Cam Ly – Da Lat. The drive from Ho Chi Minh City still mostly follows National Road 20, as the Dau Giay – Lien Khuong Expressway is under construction. That makes it a bigger trip than Vung Tau or Phan Thiet. Here is practical advice from Car Rental Vietnam drivers who run the Da Lat route regularly; read the route and mountain-pass tips before you go.

        New and trending places

Delight Park Da Lat (Than Tho Lake)

Delight Park is a flower and light-art park at 113 Ho Xuan Huong, Lam Vien ward, covering almost 40 ha around the Than Tho Lake landmark. By day you walk through more than 3 ha of themed four-season gardens. In the evening there is a light tour and a water-music show on Suong Mai Lake. To see the night show, plan to stay at least one night in Da Lat.

Tuyen Lam Lake, tea hills and seasonal flower gardens

Tuyen Lam Lake still suits travellers who like a slower pace. Seasonal flower gardens around the Mimosa pass and Trai Mat become photo spots each year. These gardens open and close irregularly, so ask your driver or locals before stopping.

Getting to Da Lat by car: two options

Option 1 is driving from Ho Chi Minh City: take the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway, then National Road 20 through Dinh Quan, Bao Loc, Di Linh and Duc Trong up to Da Lat, about 300 km. Once the Dau Giay – Lien Khuong Expressway is finished the trip will drop to around 3 hours, but it is not open yet.

Option 2 is flying to Lien Khuong Airport and having a car meet you. From the airport the Lien Khuong – Prenn Expressway brings you about 30 – 35 km into the centre.

        Frequently asked questions

Should I self-drive to Da Lat?

Only if you are used to mountain passes and have someone to share the driving. Otherwise, or if you travel with elderly people, a car with driver is safer.

Is flying to Lien Khuong and renting a car convenient?

Very, for a 2 – 3 day trip. The driver meets you at the airport, takes you around and drops you back on departure day. Send your flight number so we can time the pick-up.

Which car is best for Da Lat?

Groups of 4 – 6 should pick a 7-seat SUV or MPV such as the Kia Sorento, Ford Everest or Toyota Veloz. Larger groups can choose a 16-seater or a 9 – 12 seat limousine van.

How much is a car to Da Lat?

It depends on the number of days and the car type. See the price list for the Ho Chi Minh City – Da Lat route or call our hotline for an all-inclusive quote.
