Two islands, one special zone
Cat Hai island lies on the inside, home to the Lach Huyen deep-water port; Cat Ba island lies further out and is many times larger, with Cat Ba National Park and Lan Ha Bay. The Tan Vu – Lach Huyen sea bridge, opened in 2017 and about 5.4 km long, connects mainland Hai Phong with Cat Hai island. From Cat Hai you cross to Cat Ba on the Got – Cai Vieng ferry or the Phu Long – Cat Ba sea cable car.
Seasons and tips
Summer (May–August) is busy, so book car and ferry early. November to March is cool, the beaches are quiet and rooms cheaper. During storms, ferries and boats stop on harbour authority orders; your driver will update the plan.
What to see on Cat Ba
Cat Ba National Park has a trail up Ngu Lam peak, Trung Trang cave and a reserve for the Cat Ba langur. The town has Cat Co 1, 2 and 3 beaches, linked by a cliffside walkway. From Beo pier, boats head into Lan Ha Bay, Cai Beo fishing village and Monkey Island. Cannon Fort on the hill looks down over the bay.
Driving to Cat Ba
- Hanoi to Got ferry pier is about 130 km: expressway to Hai Phong, then Tan Vu bridge, roughly 2.5 hours.
- Ferries run many times a day, about 15–20 minutes per crossing; summer weekends can mean a wait.
- On the island, Cai Vieng pier to Cat Ba town is about 30 km of hill road, 40 minutes.
