The market runs on the river from about 5 am until 8–9 am and is liveliest at first light. Wholesale boats hang their goods on a tall pole so buyers can see from afar what each boat sells: pineapples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, watermelons. Small boats weave between them selling coffee, hu tieu noodle soup and banh mi right on the water. Cai Rang floating market was listed as national intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
By road or by boat
The usual way is to board a boat at Ninh Kieu Wharf, ride about 30 minutes to the market, and add a rice-noodle workshop and a fruit garden. By car you can reach Cai Rang bridge and watch the market from above, or go to the Cai Rang landing and hire a short boat ride. The car picks you up at your hotel around 5 am, drops you at the wharf and meets you where the boat lands.
