Can Tho is preparing a project of almost 30 billion VND to preserve the 120-year-old Cai Rang floating market, a national intangible cultural heritage since 2016. The plan divides the river into a core zone for trading boats and a buffer zone for tour boats along about 3 km from Ninh Kieu wharf to the market. Only about 250 – 300 boats remain, mostly serving tourists, so go very early to see real trading.
Con Son islet in the Binh Thuy area is known for fish-farm rafts, the "flying snakehead fish" show, fruit orchards and making traditional cakes with local families. The Can Tho investment, trade and tourism promotion centre says the city is solving infrastructure issues so this model can grow sustainably. From the centre, take the small ferry across.
