Buon Ma Thuot by car: coffee, Dray Nur waterfall, Buon Don and the dry season. Buon Ma Thuot is now the central ward of Dak Lak province (merged from Dak Lak and Phu Yen in 2025). It is over 320 km by road from Ho Chi Minh City; many families fly in and hire a car locally.
Buon Ma Thuot has an airport. The road trip from HCMC is long, so plan rest stops. See HCMC to Buon Ma Thuot prices. Tuy Hoa is about 160–185 km away if you want to continue to the coast.
From around November the Central Highlands enter the dry season, with sunny days and cool nights. Late in the year is also coffee harvest season, and you may see coffee drying along the roads. Waterfalls still carry water early in the dry season.
Coffee, red crab noodle soup and grilled chicken are local favourites. Rocks at the falls are slippery, so wear shoes with grip and keep back from the edge.
Families: a 7-seater. Groups: a 16-seater. For the long drive from HCMC, consider a limousine van. See also car rental in HCMC.
Travelling to Buon Ma Thuot with young children? Ask in advance and we will fit child seats. Year-end prices run higher; Tết bookings take a deposit of about 10%.
Since 2025, the new Dak Lak province.
2–3 days cover the city, waterfalls and Buon Don.

Coffee blossom usually comes around February to March, after the first watering, and the harvest runs late in the year. Both are good times to drive out to the plantations around Buon Ma Thuot. Dak Lak merged with Phu Yen in 2025, so the trip can also end on the coast at Tuy Hoa. In the dry season, red dust on rural roads is heavy; keep windows closed and allow time for a car wash before returning a rental. See Saigon to Buon Ma Thuot prices and Tuy Hoa road trip.
