Vung Tau in 2026: closer, newer and still the classic beach weekend

Booking a Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau car rental with driver is still the easiest way to enjoy a beach weekend in the south, and in 2026 the trip got even easier. After the 2025 administrative merger, Vung Tau is now part of Ho Chi Minh City, with its centre in Vung Tau ward. The Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway is fully open, Back Beach (Bai Sau) has been redeveloped, and there is a new square and a new water park. Below, the Car Rental Vietnam team shares what our customers ask most: which road to take, where to park, what to eat and how to plan one day. We hope this guide helps your trip run smoothly.

        New and trending places

Tam Thang Tower and square (Back Beach)

On Thuy Van street, the Tam Thang Tower square was developed by Sun Group with Italian architect Oliviero Godi. It became a favourite photo spot for young visitors from around September 2025. LED lighting comes on in the evening, which is when it is busiest. Under the Mui Vong Canh area there is a semi-basement zone with places to rest and get drinks. Many of our customers walk along the beach here after dinner.

        The renewed Back Beach

The Back Beach upgrade cost close to 1,100 billion VND. It added six public service stations, a red pedestrian bridge over the sea, a 3D mapping light show area and new lighting along the shore. With small children, a cool late-afternoon walk, a swim and dinner nearby is plenty.

Sun World Vung Tau (Aqua Adventure water park)

The park opened on 12 February 2026 in Blanca City, 3 Thang 2 street, Phuoc Thang ward. Opening hours change by season (a new schedule applies from 17 September 2026), so check the official site sunworld.vn before you go. At launch, Sun World announced a promotional ticket of 199,000 VND per person valid until 31 May 2026. Current prices differ between weekdays and weekends; check the official ticket channels. Some weekend evenings have fireworks.

Driving from Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau

The Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway is over 54 km long and has been fully open since 18 May 2026. The usual route today: from central Ho Chi Minh City take the HCMC – Long Thanh Expressway, switch to the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway, exit at the National Road 56 interchange near Ba Ria, then follow the link road into Vung Tau. National Road 51 remains the backup.

        Leg Typical time Notes
Central HCMC – Vung Tau (expressway) About 1 h 45 min – 2 h 30 min Depends on city traffic and weekend volume
Front Beach – Back Beach About 10 – 15 min Via Ha Long or Thuy Van street

Our drivers' advice: on Saturday leave before 6 am; on Sunday head back before 2 pm or after 7 pm to avoid the return rush.

        Frequently asked questions

Is a Vung Tau day trip tiring?

With the expressway, a day trip is fairly easy. If you travel with elderly relatives or small children, a car with driver lets everyone rest on the way.

What size car for a family of 5 – 6?

A 7-seater such as the Toyota Veloz, Kia Carnival or Mitsubishi Xpander fits well and has room for beach gear. Groups of 9 or more can consider a 16-seater or a limousine van.

How much is a self-drive car to Vung Tau?

Our self-drive cars cost about 800,000 – 1,200,000 VND per day depending on the model. For a full route price with driver, see the price list or call our hotline.

Do I need to book ahead for a weekend?

Book at least 2 – 3 days ahead, and 1 – 2 weeks ahead for public holidays, because 7-seaters sell out first.
